Hey—listen I have studied under two Augustine theologians in college (one priest and one secular theologian) and they all use the Sister Maria Boulding translation. That is the standard–I read through Book IX or so and it is a wonderful translation. I have not read any other translations. Even on the cover The Archbishop of Canterbury states “It is not exaggeration to say that Sister Maria Boulding’s translation is of a different level of excellence from practically anything else on the market”. Anyway, whatever you do, TOLLE LEGE!!! Take up and read!!! What a read through, pay careful attention to the early story about the Fig Tree (just think about it a lot). Just enjoy every word of Augustine, it is beauty and almost like a prayer in itself. City of God would be the next logical step, but it is longer and probably more difficult. Another interesting work is “On Free Choice of the Will”. But definintely read Confessions and make sure you read a little into his life also. Hope you enjoy!

**My wonderful priest, Fr. Derek Lappe, gave me this translation by John K. Ryan, which was instrumental in my reconversion & return to the Catholic Church.
