Austin police warn of ‘armed’ rioters planning to access buildings: reports​

Groups of protesters began arriving in Austin, Texas, on Saturday evening amid warnings to the public from local police about potential trouble as the night progresses.

Residents of several apartment complexes near police department headquarters have received letters from property managers, warning that “armed” protesters may try to access the buildings to get a better view of the protests below, FOX 7 of Austin reported.

“Keep your eyes open for anyone that might be on the roof or upper balconies,” one warning letter said.

Hundreds of Austin police officers – many of them in riot gear, or riding horses or bicycles – were being deployed in the capital city of Texas in a bid to minimize rioting and vandalism, the Austin American Statesman reported.

As of 10 p.m. local time, police had arrested or detained at least eight people, according to the newspaper. . . .

Earlier in the evening, a crowd marched from the University of Texas campus toward the home of Austin City Councilmember Kathie Tovo – to call on her to help slash the city’s police budget by $100 million.
“That’s a moderate demand from the Brown and Black community,” protest organizer Robert Foster told the Statesman.
Tovo had posted on Facebook on Friday that she stands “in solidarity with community members calling for change.”
She had previously called for no cuts to the police budget, FOX 7 reported.

Defunding the police isn’t actually happening anywhere anyway. Where it is happening to any extent they’re just increasing the funding of police by less than previously planned.
 
@JonNC The idea that this cut is happening because of the protests is misleading. It’s happening in the context of necessary budget cuts driven by the recent recession which is affecting lots of other departments of local government, and some of the functions and funding of the NYPD are just being moved to different departments.

I’m not doing the misleading. De Blasio and his allies are. Whatever the reason, the dramatic spike in violent crime In New York is not caused by the police. It is caused by the perception the mayor has perpetuated that police presence will be reduced. We’re not talking about protesters or even rioters. We are talking about criminals.

There have been several arrest though from previous protests for crimes committed. I think the message will go out that protesters can protest in Austin, but those who tear stuff up or fight with police are being prosecuted and may go to prison.

BTW, mounted officers are on of the best and most effective means of crowd control in these situations. Yes, I know there was one incident, but over all, no one is ever hurt if they stay away from the horse, the officers have a higher vantage which allows for fewer mistakes, and no one can muscle a horse out of the way.
