I had not heard of the Authentic Magisterium until I returned to the Church in 2000 after 2 decades. I believe I had a reasonable grasp of Ordinary Magisterium and even constant Magisterium.
Is there any difference in Authentic vs Ordinary
?**
If so what are they**?**
When did the adjective Authentic come into popular use?**
Is the Authentic as infallible as the Ordinary or Constant, etc**?**
Since the Church is known historically for precision, I would assume that there are reasons or occasions to use properly one and not the other adjective.

Authentic as opposed to Un-authentic? I would believe that this may have come into use to differentiate between the True teaching authority of the Church and the opinions of some theologians.

There is the Ordinary and the Extra-Ordinary Magisterium, both being authentic.

I am still having difficulty with the distinction between Ordinary and Extra-Ordinary, but I have heard the term “Authentic”.

In the context in which it was used it meant that it came from an “official” document issued by the Vatican. It did not mean, for example, the contents of an interview that a priest may have given to a newspaper.

I think the adjective “authentic” just serves to distinguish the magisterium from non-magisterial comments and remarks that are not intended as teachings for the faithful. The authentic magisterium can be broken down into the following groups:
  • Ordinary episcopal magisterium - A single bishop teaching in communion with Rome.
  • Ordinary papal magisterium - The Pope teaching without invoking papal infallibility.
  • Ordinary universal magisterium - All the bishops, including the Pope, teaching the same thing even though they are spread throughout the world.
  • Extra-ordinary papal magisterium - The Pope teaching infallibly, i.e., “ex cathedra”.
  • Extra-ordinary universal magisterium - All the bishops, including the Pope, teaching in an ecumenical council.
The last three items in this list are infallible teaching.

Ok. I’m getting closer. Does Authentic mean infallible or fallible or neither?
Also, if we have the 5 versions, does authentic exclude any of them, or necessarily include a set of the versions?

If we already have 5 versions of the Magisterium, as you point out, why do we need another one (authentic) unless it is referencing more than one in the 5 versions?

God Bless

“Authentic” means that the faithful must follow the given teaching. We are bound to follow both the infallible and the non-infallible magisiterium.

An example of something that is not a part of the authentic magisterium would be a personal opinion of a bishop or Pope.

Authentic includes all 5 versions, that is, the 3 infallible versions and the 2 non-infallible versions.
