For some unknown reason, I had never read much of Gene Wolfe’s work in the past, although many have recommended him and he is highly regarded in both the science fiction community and in literature as a whole for his large body of work, and is adept in both the novel and short story forms. I knew he was Catholic, and that his faith informed his work, which always interests me in an author’s work, but only recently have I started reading him.

WOW!

Just an amazingly talented writer by any standard, very influenced (as he will admit) by Chesterton and Borges. I’m working my way through a collection of his short stories, and the story “The Detective of Dreams” is just an astonishing work, very affecting, and one of my new favorites, and there are so many incredible pieces in there. Wolfe’s Catholicism is sometimes in the forefront, sometimes not as obvious, but he always seems to be writing from a Catholic perspective. I need to start working my way through his “Book of the New Sun” series.

Just, wow. Sometimes you run across a writer and sample his work and think a) why didn’t I start reading him long ago, and then b) experience a frisson of delight when you realize he has been incredibly productive for decades, and now you have* all this great writing* waiting for you…

Thank you for the review; I think I will sample it as well. Glad you enjoyed it.
