Yep! Just as Augustine and most of the early leaders believed, it was the faith of Peter that Christ built His church upon and Christ is the cornerstone and head of the church. No one else…
Don’t limit one shred of Augustine’s teaching to say he believed it was ONLY Peter’s faith that was the Rock. That’s poor scholarship. Augustine’s writings teach that it was Peter AND Peter’s Confession that are both the Rock. They are inseparable.
But if they don’t get to do both, then they didn’t really participate, did they!
Sigh - Yes they do. Because when they get what looks like the Bread, the Partake of His Body and His Blood. When they drink of the Cup, they again partake of His Body and His Blood.

The Protestant faith teaches the same things the apostles did. They don’t make up their own doctrines and practices. We follow the Scriptures…We have the truth to combat heresies with—the Scriptures. There is no other way, other than man’s way.

I can list many things the RCC does that can’t be found in Scripture but is an invention of man. Can you show me something done by Protestants that can’t be found in Scripture?
Which Protestant faith teaches the same things the apostles did? Did the apostles simultaneously teach that baptism was a symbolic, non-salvific gesture that the new believer makes AND that baptism is also salvific and washes away sins? Did the apostles simultaneously teach that we are eternally secure AND we can lose our salvation? Did the apostles simultaneously teach that only men can be pastors AND women can be pastors, too? Did the apostles simultaneously teach that Christ died for all men AND Christ only died for those who will accept Him?

Where in the Bible does it say:
  • Scripture alone is the sole rule of faith for Christians?
  • We are saved, or justified, by faith alone?
  • Baptism is a symbolic gesture that the already saved believer makes to show his commitment to God?
  • That every individual, Christian or not, has the right to interpret every single passage of Scripture on their own in order to determine, by their own authority, what is true doctrine and what is false doctrine?
  • That you are to have altar calls/invitations?
  • That it is okay to disagree on the “non-essential” doctrines as long as you agree on the “essential” doctrines? That there is even such a thing as a non-essential doctrine…a non-essential part of the Word of God?
Those are just a few Protestant inventions not found in the Bible.

Are you saying that the Roman Catholic Churches are all agreed on everrything? What about the homosexual priests, women priests, those who accept abortion, etc…?
I can tell you that individual Catholic may believe this, and they are in error in their beliefs. I can also tell you that the Roman Catholic Church has and always will condemn homosexuality among the priesthood. She will always condemn women priests. And She will always condemn abortion.

There’s a huge difference between what individuals (who are fallible) believe and what the Church (Who is infallible on faith and morals) teaches.
I have been trying to get this thread back on topic but haven’t been able to.
Oh yeah, you’ve brought up alcholic priests, homosexual priests, and a variety of other false leads in order to get this thread back on topic.

My Bad.

There are not Roman Catholic “churches,” there is a Church which embraces many members, a socierty of believers. That does not mean than all members are agreed on every point of doctrine. It means there are doctrines to which all are supposed to conform. It also means that, in human terms, the range of dissent among instructed Catholics is narrower than among instructed "Protestants. "

It seems you are painting all Protestants with the same brush. If I posted a picture of the pope kissing the Koran—would that be true of all Catholics?

I don’t make the claim that all Protestants agree any more than you make the claim that all RCC agrees. If you do make such a claim then you are not up to date.

The only thing you listed that could be considered doctrine is the justification by faith alone and that is taught quite definitely taught in Scripture. Protestants have not changed that.

That’s commendable and I am glad to consider us ‘brothers in Christ’ even though we disagree on many things.
And no matter how I may come across (I know these internet forums do a poor job of showing our true feelings), I think of you as a Brother in Christ. I hope to continue our discussion in heaven one day, my Brother.
Every Christmas and New Years, I watch the masses from Rome with the pope. However, they never offer the cup during those times. Are you aware of that? Is that a regular practice of Rome?
I think that is because of the sheer numbers. You must understand, all the Chalices would need to be on the altar when the Bread and the Wine are Consecrated. With a 1/2 million people in attendance and considering that 100-200 could possibly drink from one cup, that would still leave over 250 chalices!!!

And furthermore, they all have to be on the same linen cloth on that Altar when the Eucharistic Prayers are said. The Wine is never left over from a previous Mass, unlike the Hosts, so ALL the wine would have to be present on the Altar for the 1/2 million people in attendance. The Hosts, however, could have been consecrated at a smaller Mass and brought from the Tabernacle right before Communion.

So, I think the problem is one with logistics, not permittance. And remember, just because one doesn’t drink from the Cup doesn’t mean one doesn’t partake of His Precious Blood (as long as they took the Communion Host).

It seems I can’t catch up—1 against quite a few…I think, since the storm has passed, that I will take a quick swim before dinner. Later…

That explains why Protestant churches are so incredibly bare and bland and your ‘liturgy’ is like saltless crackers. All you go by is the scriptures. It is like hobbling to Christ on one leg!

Yes, Christ placed great importance on Peter’s faith! It was one of the reasons why Jesus gave the keys to Peter! Peter name occurs more in the NT than all the other apostles combined. Every single time the apostles are listed in the NT Peter is always listed first. Or it’s just “Peter and apostles”. You see?! Even the NT writers were keenly aware of Peter’s pre-eminence! People even tried to get Peter’s shadow to fall on them so they could be healed. The vision of eating unclean meat was given to Peter. Peter condemned Anania and Saphira (sp?) to death for their transgression!

I wish you could see it. It’s so obvious.

There is a massive stone below the temple that bears most of the weight of the building. It’s not the cornerstone that determined where it would be positioned but as stones are layed increasingly higher it is the stone supporting more and more of the structure. It’s called the kepha stone.

The thing is, in the case of Protestant Christian communities, it’s not what is done as much as what isn’t that causes division with the original church.

The Original Church had visible boundaries. It’s maturation was preserved by an oral tradition. It had a teaching authority. It had authoritative scripture the teachers used to validate the revelation of Christ they were making visible.

That looks more like the Catholic Church.

Peter may have been the chief apostle but he took a back seat to Paul. One of the reasons Peter’s name was mentioned so much was when Christ had to keep reprimanding him. The main reason Peter’s name is mentioned more times than Paul is that Paul wasn’t around for the gospels and Paul wrote most of the Bible. You couldn’t expect him to write his own name.

Peter was a great apostle but the faith was built primarily by Paul.

Happy Feast of the Assumption Old Scholar!

may you one day enter into Apostolic Christianity!

Then you must rejoice over the Theotokas’ assumption into Heaven? No?
Sorry but there was no such assumption. Show me in the Bible where that happened. That is another assumption of man in the RCC. It isn’t found in Scripture and didn’t happen…

For HUNDREDS years Christians have been celebrating this Feast. You MUST SURELY been aware of this feast since you are so into apostolic Christianity right?

Worst. Pun. Ever. 😉

Good one!

You keep bringing up this notion that everything we Christians should believe must be found in Sacred Scripture. Where do you get this strange idea??!!
