Some people like to talk just for the sake of talking…I’m not saying that OS (or anybody else for that matter) is doing that but it seems a lot of people on here do…Where I stand on the Authority of the church and with the Papacy starting with St. Peter is this…When God says, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”…I BELIEVE GOD. It is up to you whether you want to believe God or not…That is why Sacred Scripture says, “And without faith it is impossible to please him.” I may not be an “Old Scholar” but when God speaks, I BELIEVE.

**Do you believe God when he says this:

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me**.

i am not criticizing you for your choice to be a protestant.
right now i am watching the pioneer commemoration day event with the osmonds. there are so many people in the audience.
the mormon tabernacle choir is singing. now, i don’t agree with joseph smith, but these people all seem to have a deep love for Jesus as i am sure you do also. what about the mormons or the 7th day adventists? do you put them in the same category as the catholics? just wondering.

Of course I do. What follower of Christ wouldn’t believe that?

Are these enough for you? What changes in the doctrines of the Protestant churches can you list?
How about, in some of them you don’t have to believe in God to be ordained. How’s that for a change. The “changes” you listed for the Catholic Church were matters of discipline, not dogma. Priestly celibacy is a discipline, and can be changed. Not ordaining women to the priesthood is a defined dogma and is not subject to change.
Maybe you should broaden your knowledge…Here is the site for women priests in the RCC:
Roman Catholic Priests
These people are not Catholics. Anyone involved in these “ordinations” has excommunicated themselves.

You still haven’t told us what church you are a member of. If I had to guess, I’d say Mormon, but not mainstream Mormon, probably one of the polygamist sects. I say this because of your belief in the “Great Apostasy” and your wildly untrue characterizations about what the Catholic Church is all about.

Believe me, Mormons do not have a monopoly on the “Great Apostasy”. Its become such a convenient alibi, that numerous other faiths have latched onto it, such as the Church of Christ. Its sort of like the “Trail of Blood” theory, if it implicates the falsity of the Catholic Church, then its got to be true, even if there’s no proof to verify it!

We hold to everything God says, including what he taught through His Apostles. You hold to only that which is written down - its almost like worshiping a book.

We would all be better Christians if we were as committed as the Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses. You must agree they take their religion seriously.

Although I am not a SDA, I believe they are right about the Sabbath, as are the Church of God. I do not believe they are a cult, as they both teach from Scripture and believe the Trinity.

I must say however that in my opinion, the JWs, whose authority is the Watchtower, the Mormons, whose authority is the book of Mormon and the Roman Catholic Church, whose authority is the Pope and the Magesterium, are all in the same category. Do I believe there are Christians in all of those organizations? Of course. As long as one believes his salvation comes from a personal commitment with Jesus Christ, then I believe that person is a Christian, since that is what is taught in Scripture.

I don’t mean to be so confrontational with anyone but if you belong to either of those groups, then I will communicate with you and try to get you to at least read the Scriptures. That’s all I can do. I am very interested in why those groups believe as they do when the Bible tells us different. That’s the only reason I participate in these forums—to learn, not to antagonize. I can’t find out what you are thinking if I don’t pose questions.

We have it all written down and don’t have to rely on anyone to tell us what it says. Sorry but that’s my opinion. We all say we believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God and if we don’t read it, then we won’t know what it says.

If Calvin, Luther, Zwingli and the others had come along hundreds of years earlier, perhaps a real reformation would have occurred and we could all be sailing the same ship. That’s why I say that for the first couple hundred years, everything was fine…then Rome got too involved.

May God bless you and yours…I’m on my way to the beach for about a week…Later!

Old Scholar - please forgive me for appearing to be confrontational,
i haven’t read that many of your posts, but i can see that you definitely have issues with the Pope and the Catholic church.
how do you think the world would be different today if the Catholic church had never existed?

enjoy your week at the beach.

what faith do you practice?

i attend mass saturday evening, does that count as Sabbath to you? or since it is a 5pm mass is that too late to count as the Sabbath. sometimes, i also attend a Sunday morning mass and sometimes i attend mass during the week. that is what i like about the Catholic church, i can meet Him any day of the week to receive Holy Communion. i don’t have to limit going to church to one day of the week to meet Him. i also visit the adoration chapels near my home and pray at home and ready my Catholic books and when i go to bed at night i am so thankful for the Pope, who is our spiritual shepherd here on earth.

That is painting with a VERY broad brush. It seems you are quite biased towards the Mormons and JW’s. We are called to not be lukewarm for our faith…Rev 3:16 “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.” I take my faith in Christ VERY seriously.
Although I am not a SDA, I believe they are right about the Sabbath, as are the Church of God. I do not believe they are a cult, as they both teach from Scripture and believe the Trinity.
The reason we worship on Sunday and not Saturday is because our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was resurrected on Sunday. Wouldn’t it make sense to worship the risen Lord on the day He was risen? 🙂 For Catholics though, Mass is every single day. If you have the time, you could attend Mass every day of the week even though Holy Obligation is only on Sunday because of the aforementioned reason. But I am sure you would like some scripture to go along with this reasoning and here ya go! Acts 20:7 “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and he prolonged his speech until midnight.”
I must say however that in my opinion, the JWs, whose authority is the Watchtower, the Mormons, whose authority is the book of Mormon and the Roman Catholic Church, whose authority is the Pope and the Magesterium, are all in the same category. As long as one believes his salvation comes from a personal commitment with Jesus Christ, then I believe that person is a Christian, since that is what is taught in Scripture.
For one to be a Christian, you should be baptized in trinatarian form…Look at Matthew 28:18-20…Believe Jesus Christ is God…John 3:16…Repent from your sins…Luke 13:3…and confess Jesus as Lord Romans 10:9-10. Faith alone doesn’t cut it…I’m not implying that you believe in that but for the benefit of those out there that do…Even St. Paul wasn’t sure he was saved…He said, Php 2:12 “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”
We have it all written down and don’t have to rely on anyone to tell us what it says. Sorry but that’s my opinion. We all say we believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God and if we don’t read it, then we won’t know what it says.
It isnt as much that we have to rely on the church to tell us what it says. It is just that there are so many different interpretations out there that we need to know what the TRUE interpretation of certain verses are and that can only be found in the church that was given the Authority by Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 16:18).
If Calvin, Luther, Zwingli and the others had come along hundreds of years earlier, perhaps a real reformation would have occurred and we could all be sailing the same ship. That’s why I say that for the first couple hundred years, everything was fine…then Rome got too involved.
Show me at least one inkling of historical proof that “everything was fine…then Rome got too involved.” Peter was given the Keys and then eventually He went to Rome to help Paul preach to the Gentiles. Unfortunately they both met their demise in Rome but, from that time forward, all the Popes from St. Peter to the present Pope have all resided in Rome. Maybe you can go into more detail what exactly you mean by Rome getting too involved as well.
May God bless you and yours…I’m on my way to the beach for about a week…Later!
Have fun at the beach. I await your response upon your return. God bless.

I’m not OS but I think I’d like to take a crack at this one 🙂 If the Catholic church never existed, then the church wouldn’t exist. Mat 16:18 “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.” There is only ONE church that Peter is the rock of and that is Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic church. No Catholic church, no Authority from Jesus Christ Himself, there would be nothing for reformers to reform from.
what faith do you practice?
I’m interested to hear this answer as well. It says in his profile that he is “non-catholic, non-protestant.” That really doesn’t leave very many other churches other than Mormons and JW’s.

That is what is so great about the Catholic church. You don’t have to wait a whole week to worship God one day. You can do it every single day! 🙂 That’s the way the Apostles wanted it…Act 2:42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Act 2:46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts.” Yes we should all be thankful for the Pope. Without the Authority passed down to him by St. Peter who received the awesome grace of Authority by Jesus Christ Himself, the Catholic church would be nothing more than another denomination and would have never lasted 2000 years. It is only through Christ’s divine powers that His church has withstood time and MANY humanly errors. Remember that the church is never sinful but the people inside it are! 🙂 Just my :twocents:

These writings show that part of the church was beginning to lean toward Rome. Still no primacy established.
“As I said, here in the 4th century was when it first started. Yet no primacy established, just cooperation by all”

Scholar old or new, I am not, but if I am not mistaken, I have noticed the Popes ask for “cooperation” from the Bishops including the present times. Even the Pope cannot make one do what one doesn’t wish to do. He cannot order anyone. In the early Church, Peter was accorded deferential respect because of his close relationship with Christ. Letters were written to Peter by other Bishops defering to his adv ice and decisions. Perhaps the title Supreme Authority and Pope were not in the linguistic ability of the clergy of the early church, but the respect given to Peter is an indication he held a higher role in the Church than other Bishops.

i would like to say i agree with everything curtis has posted and i would like to add and answer one of my own questions? what would the world be like if the Catholic church had never existed?
think of how much the Catholic church has contributed to civilization. the Catholic church has given many biblical, legal, social and charitable contributions. the Catholic church helped to teach civilization to pursue good and not evil, to help our fellow man, to worship God, our creator, the importance of family. in fact, our world would be in better shape today if the world had paid closer attention to the teachings of the church 40 years ago.
our country and pretty much a lot of the west has been in moral decline with the marketing of the birth control pill. then we had legalizing of abortions, people living together without being married. there has been a continually rising divorce rate. the sanctity of what God put man and woman on earth for was lost. it was all taken for granted. the porn industry has grown into a multi billion dollar a year industry. the RCC tried to warn us what would happen, but we were wanting our freedome to follow our free will and fulfill our desires. we were lied to like the serpent lied to Eve. we, as a society, took a bite of the apple and look at where we are now. if people and governments had only listened to what the Mother Church was trying to warn us about. She did not want to see women being exploited, she did not want little babies being aborted, she did not want to see marriages cheapened and broken apart. but that is exactly what happened.
God has divinely revealed to the Catholic church the teachings.
sorry for going on so long, but i had to get this out because it makes me really sad what the world has become.

I feel your pain as well. Even though I have only been around for close to 30 years, I can see how the moral fabric of our society is getting worse by the second. Things that you mentioned such as abortion and contraception are considered “choices” and marriages, relationships, work, etc. are being destroyed by the pornography industry. But, going back to contraception, did you know that most, if not all, churches believed in no contraception until 1931 when a Methodist preacher, I believe, agreed to it? Look at it now. Babies are being given no chance to live through constant contraception being used and also being murdered when a mother feels “she’s not ready” for a baby or it cramps her lifestyle. I have heard all the debates about how its a woman’s choice to keep her baby. What about if the baby she has murdered is a female? What happens to the sacred “woman’s choice” then? It gets annihiliated before the baby girl has a chance to become a woman. Thank you for bringing these issues up. The Catholic church is the foundation of Western Civilization as we know it and brought the morality, love, and ultimate message of salvation to this side of the world. If you’re not Catholic, what exactly has your church done to benefit this world? It certainly has, and never will, reach the good that has come from Christ’s church; the Holy, Apostolic, and Catholic church that Christ established with Peter as the Rock and given the Keys to the Kingdom by Jesus Christ Himself. God bless you all.

Curtis

OS, I hope you know this is an incomplete (and possibly misleading) statement. Those books were readily available to the Church, but that doesn’t mean they were universally accepted, or that they weren’t the only ones that were used by the Church.

Revelation, Hebrews, and the Catholic Letters were a long time coming in the “universally accepted” realm. Other books were accepted in various regions - Clement’s Epistle to Corinth and the Shepherd of Hermas just to name a couple.

BTW, do you understand what the word “Canon” means? It boils down to what books are allowed to be read in the Catholic Liturgy, or what books are allowed to be read in Mass.
The lists you mentioned were many and varied until the 4th century.

Your definition of “Canon” must be a special definition of the RCC only. In fact, it is defined as:

“The books of the Bible recognized by any Christian Church as genuine and inspired, officially recognized as sacred books, the body of rules, principles, or standards accepted as axiomatic and universally binding on Christians. Once a Canon has been declared, it is closed and not subject to any additions or deletions.”

Your history of the Canon should tell you that We have much more evidence that a list of New Testament books existed long before any evidence of any one called a pope existed, and hundreds of years before the church became the Roman Catholic Church, with a pope as leader.

Marcion had a list of canonized books…

Justin Martyr, 150 A.D. had a list of canonized books.

Origen established a Canon of books in his time, 185 - 254 A.D.

The Canon of Eusebius of Caesarea 265 - 340 A.D.

The Canon of Cyril of Jerusalem 350 A.D.

Clement of Alexandria had a Canon 180 - 211.

Hippolytus 170 - 235.

Irenaeus used the same Canon during his time in 130 - 202 A.D.

Cyprian of Carthage had a list converted in 246 A.D.

The Muratorian Canon is also dated to the end of the second century.

Athanasius of Alexandria set forth a NT Canon with a listing of books identical to those we have today.

While a few of the books were not accepted ab all until later, they were certainly all in circulation and the 27 we have today were already accepted by most from very early on.

While some of the books you mentioned, and others, were often read in the churches from time to time, they were never accepted as authoritative or inspired and were read the same way we read them today, for historical and reading purposes—not for anything authoritative because they are spurious.

It was because of such books as these that the church decided to declare an official Canon that everyone would agree on and of course, it was the 27 books already accepted, nothing else. All the leaders of the churches that were truly Christian Churches used the same 27 books and the disagreements were mostly from those who were attempting to change the gospel. The 27 books we have today were always the ones most believed and taught from. Where do you see the early church leaders quoting from the apocryphal books or any of the others not accepted? While there may be a few quotes, it is said that the writings of the early church leaders have fully constituted the New Testament in their writings and if you read their writings you will virtually all the New Testatmen there, word for word, as they quoted it.

🙂

i have a question for Old Scholar. why does the Catholic church bother you so much that you feel you must try to disprove the authority of the Church and the Pope? why can’t you just be protestant and leave well enough alone? if you don’t believe that the Catholic church is the true church, you have the right to your opinion, but why continue to come here and argue the point. why not leave us Catholics to practice our faith the way we want to and follow our beliefs? i attended many protestant churches and i always felt like there was something missing. it didn’t seem complete. even when i was in the anglican communion, there was something not quite right. have you ever attended a Catholic mass?
Yes I have, more than once. I always wonder why, during the Eucharist, they don’t follow God’s instructions and let the laity drink of the cup???

I seek not to disprove the authority of the pope or the RCC but instead to prove the authority of the Bible. There is no authority given the church or the pope in Scripture, except the church is told to take care of their members and authority is given to the believers to discipline themselves. The Elders and deacons are instructed as to how to take care of their flock, administer sacraments, etc. but given no special authority over anyone.

When Christ established His Church, He only established one church and it consists of all believers, not just one denomination. He gave no special authority to any one group of believers and certainly did not establish any organization or heirocracy as claimed by the RCC. As I have said many times before, things were great until they took over the Church…that’s when all the non-biblical doctrines and claims came into play. Well, believe it or not, there are still many churches teaching exactly what the apostles taught, nothing more and nothing less—that’s the way God intended it…

If I can only get some to read the Bible and find out what it says, then I feel I have done all I can…
