Authority order

Hey guys,

I am going to be writing this fundamentalist gentleman on how the Catholic Church is biblical (as well as the primative church). I am trying to decide what order I should start it with in the Authority section. Sacred Tradition, the Bible (Deutercanonical books), Papacy, Church. How do you think I should order this in my letter? Thanks and God bless.
 
You’re not going to get anywhere with a fundamentalist Protestant unless you begin and end with scripture. Make your points first from scripture, then move on from there.
 
I would start with Matthew 16:18 and move to John 21:15-19 to show how Jesus gave authority to Peter. Point out that historians of every nation agree on the list of the successors of Peter, that Jesus was the founder of the Catholic Church, and that Jesus appointed Peter as Vicar of His Church. Of course, they don’t believe that Jesus was divine, or that He rose from the dead, but the succession of the Papacy is an incontrovertible historical reality.

For the rest, get yourself a Douay-Rheims Bible with footnotes and study helps, and make good use of the Doctrinal index. He may not convert, but he’ll gain a real appreciation of the Catholic zeal for Scripture. 😃

That’s what I am going to do. I am going to use scripture to prove all these things. I am just not sure what would be the best order in which to discuss these things.
 
You can start with any one of those! That’s the beauty of it, it’s all one little circle, so you can cover everything!

Wait a minute… she didn’t say in her original post “protestant,” she said “gentleman.” I hope you’re kidding me. Are all fundamentalists protestants now?

I’ve known no fundamentalists who were not Protestants. I suppose that there must be exceptions.

Properly speaking, a Fundamentalist is a person who believes that only the “Seven Fundamentals” are essential to salvation - that everything else is “optional.”

We Catholics believe in the Seven Fundamentals, but we also believe that God has revealed a great deal more to us than just those seven things - and surely it stands to reason that we ought to believe all that God has revealed? 😉

The Seven Fundamentals are:
  1. The Bible is incapable of error;
  2. Jesus is fully God;
  3. Jesus was born of a virgin;
  4. Jesus performed miracles that defied the laws of nature;
  5. We deserve to die for our sins but can live eternally, provided we believe Jesus died for our sins;
  6. Jesus Christ was physically resurrected from the grave and physically ascended into Heaven;
  7. Jesus will return again in physical form to judge the living and the dead, bringing about the end of the world.
