Who/when was the first to use this illustration for authority?

I believe that the Sixteenth-Century Anglican theologian Richard Hooker was the first person to use the “three-legged stool” analogy, although his stool was supported by Scripture, Tradition, and reason.

The Catholic Church defines the legs according to the Bible:
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. (2 Thessalonians 2:15)
  • Tradition
  • Authoritative teaching (Magesterium)
  • Scripture

You mean theologians engage in plagarism!

Thanks for the info.
