Automatic Excommunications?

Is it possible to be excommunicated without a bishop excommunicating you?
 
I’m not good with Latin but I think the term is something like expo facto (whatever “by the very fact” translates into Latin).

So yes, there are a few things. Having an abortion might be one of them although I am not positive. A priest breaking the seal of confession I assume would be another.

But short of a very small selection of sins, and I do not recall which ones, (abortion/murder is not one of them), one can basically be recommunicated with the Church by going to Confession with any priest.
 
Yes. Some offenses enumerated in Canon Law incur excommunication *latae sententiae *(the sentence is borne by the law itself). Others may incur excommunication *ferendae sententiae *(the sentence must be imposed by the competent authority).

EXCOMMUNICATION

Ferendae Sententiae Excommunication:

Canon 1378: The pretended celebration of the Eucharist or of sacramental Confession
Canon 1388: Violation of the seal of Confession by an interpreter

Latae Sententiae Excommunication:

Canon 1364: Apostasy, heresy or schism
Canon 1367: Violation of the Sacred Species
Canon 1370: Laying violent hands on the Pope
Canon 1378: Absolution of an accomplice
Canon 1382: Episcopal consecration without authorization from the Holy See
Canon 1388: Violation of the seal of Confession by a confessor
Canon 1398: Procuring abortion

I just looked it up on wiki and I was close: The translation I was thinking of was ipso facto but according to wiki, latae sententiae is more commonly used. But the above poster answered the question with the canon law verses.
 
You also have to know that the penalty for that act is excommunication. So, you can’t be accidentally automatically excommunicated.
