My family and I just got back from one of our best vacations every at Gulf Shore Alabama, and on the way back we we stopped at Ave Marie Grotto in Cullman Alabama.

Benedictine Monk, Brother Joseph Zoettle (1892-1961) built miniature reproductions of some of the most famous historic buildings and shrines known to man. There are 125 minatures in the four acre park that you and your family can see.

We really enjoyed it and plan on returning next time we are in the area again.
 
The pictures on the web site do not do this place justice. Brother Josheph Zoetl made most of the pieces with colored glass, marbles, broken tile, and sea shells that he collected or had donated to him.

I can’t describe how beatiful The Ave Maria Grotto is, the structure from where the place gets it’s name. It stands 27 feet tall, 27 feet wide, and 27 feet deep. And to think of this man with a bad back and who was not much taller than a fire hydren built all of these works.

If you are in the area to visit the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Mother Angelica you should stop by.

It is a great place and not too much of a detour off of I-65. I keep meaning to take my kids down there. It’s only an hour away. I should do that in the fall when the weather cools off.
 
I live in West TN and whenever we go to Orlando or the Gulf Coast we go through there and we’ve always wanted to stop at the Grotto (and the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament and EWTN, which are not too terribly far from there) but never have. Since I’m only about 3 hrs away any time I may go down there for the weekend sometime.

I didn’t realize how close they are to one another. A friend told us about the Grotto and we really wanted to see it but we didn’t have time to do both. Anyway when we do go to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament I want to plan it out so we really get the most out of it.
