Is there any website where I can legally listen to the song Ave Maria. I listened to the one from the movie “Hitman” but because of the content of the movie, I kinda don’t want to listen to the song there.

You Tube has several films of “Ave Maria” sung by various artists. Enjoy! My favorite hymn!

First, you need to know which Ave Maria you want. Gonoud and Schubert wrote two different well known versions, but there are others. Then, if you want you can listen to samples available from the iTunes store and buy any you like for 99 cents each, which is almost free, and completely legal.
 
Be aware that both the Bach-Gounod and Schubert are old enough to be in public domain.
 
The version of Ave Maria which was featured in the game Hitman: Blood Money is the one written by Schubert.

The best version of it which I have heard is the one sung by Kiri Te Kanawa. As for a free version, I don’t know of one. But you can get it for about a dollar on iTunes as has been mentioned.

You don’t have to have an ipod to use iTunes. The iTunes software itself is free.

yeah, I like the version written by Schubert. I haven’t heard the other version yet.
 
Anyhow, since this thread has been moved to Spirituality, I’d like to say that I am praying and wanting to have a deeper relationship with our Blessed Mother and to totally trust in Her care.

This song would help me remember my intentions.

Hearing the words “Ave Maria” alone are just awesome.

As you enjoy this piece, you may also want to hear Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and the choral version (it was originally an instrumental) of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ.

I was really shocked when I saw the commercial for Hitman with Ave Maria playing in the background, and I’m not easily shocked!:eek:

The whole commercial glamorizes shootouts, and they make the “hero”, who I guess is the Hitman, into somebody to look up to as he shoots his way through room after room of bad guys. Why the atheists that came up with this game chose the Ave Maria to play in the background is beyond me. They should have used a 50 Cent rap instead.

On the up side, at least the kids that play the game will hear the Ave Maria, which is likely the first and only time they will. Sad…:😦

The only version of the Schubert Ave Maria that I like is by Mario Lanza. It’s WAY overused, so there has to be something different about it (Lanza uses a children’s choir for the accompaniment). I really like the Bach/Gounod version.

The songs themselves are public domain, which means you may record and sell your own new performance without needing to obtain permission from or pay royalties to the composers, or in these cases, to the composers’ estates.

But, a particular performance of either of these, or any other public domain work performed by a contemporary artist is not public domain until the requisite amount of time has passed and other legal rights pertaining to the artist and/or his estate have expired. So you may not freely copy or distribute a particular performance of Ave Maria by Mario Lanza, Kiri Te Kanawa, Elvis, or (my favorite) Jamie O’Reilly without respecting the legal rights of the artists, the artists’ estates, or other copyright holders.
