I saw Barbara Bonney (the opera singer in the recording) live in recital a few years back. She has as very lovely voice and perfect for lieder. (She also has a great voice for the part of Sophie in “Der Rosenkavalier”).
This is the original art song that Schubert composed - the German lied, which is also a prayer to the Virgin, although not the actual Hail Mary prayer that is usually sung in the Latin.
