Ave Regina Caelorum

Just a point of interest that I have come across concerning Compline.

The UNIVERSALIS web site states that, at the end of Compline, “An antiphon to our Lady should be recited here”.

If I have been reading LOTH correctly, three antiphons are used:

SALVE, REGINA (Hail, holy Queen); except Advent and Easter
REGINA CAELI (Queen of heaven) for easter
ALMA REDEMPTORIS MATER (Loving Mother) for Advent

But my 1988 version of the Little Office gives a 4th antiphon to be used only during Lent, AVE REGINA CAELORUM (Hail, Queen of heaven).

I use a mix of LOTH and Little Office, and I have been using Ave Regina Caelorum during this season of Lent. Anyone else using this particular antiphon?

Just curious, mind you. NOT intending to start a flame war. For that, I would have posted in the Traditional Forum

Yes, in two ways. I pray The Little Office and in my choir this last Sunday we sang “Ave Regina Caelorum”.

I picked up the following someplace, a Carmelite source I think.

1st Sunday of Advent through the Feast of the Purification - Loving Mother of the Redeemer

After the Feast of the Purification to before the Easter Vigil - Ave, Regina caelorum

From the Easter Vigil to Pentecost - Queen of Heaven Rejoice

Monday after Pentecost through the last day of Ordinary time - Hail Holy Queen.

That seems to be close to what you have.

I wasn’t aware there was a restriction on the use of which Marian antiphon is sung, except the Regina Caeli is mandated for Eastertide, in the LOTH/DO.

The former (i.e. pre-1970) sequence[rough overview] was
Advent and Christmastide (then until the Purification-Feb 2[now Presentation]) - Alma Redemptoris Mate
Feb 2- Easter - Ave Regina Caelorum
Eastertide- Regina Caeli
Rest of the year: Salve Regina

Both the UK Divine Office and the ICEL LOTH give the antiphon to the BVM- Ave Regina Caelourum in Latin. The UK DO also gives a metrical version in English - “Hail, Queen of Heaven beyond compare”

I am using this antiphon though on somedays I sing the Salve Regina solemn tone. Actually IMHO, the Salve Regina is more ‘Lenten’ in tone.
