Pope Francis tore into priests who refuse to baptize the children of unwed mothers-- referring to them as “animals”-- during a June 16 meeting with participants in a Rome conference on the family.

Interesting that the headline of the article has nothing to do with the first paragraph. The headline is about avoiding rigorism in divorce and remarriage; the first paragraph is about refusing baptism to children of unwed mothers. Unrelated topics.

I noticed this too. It’s weird.

Anyway, I would humbly encourage the Pontiff to consider the words of St. Jude:
Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. On those who waver, have mercy, save others by snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear, abhorring even the outer garment stained by the flesh.
Jud. 1:21-23
Benedicat Deus,
Latinitas

I agree that when approaching the issue of divorce and remarriage, we need to be extremely prudent, and the words of St Jude come to mind.

But as regards the Baptism of children whose fathers (it is usually the father) is not in the picture, I think the Pope is right as long as the mother is committed to raising the child in the Catholic faith.
