Avoiding sin

I read someone’s comment to a post, stating that we should avoid sin because WE want to, not because we have to. I don’t really agree with this, because I think we should avoid sin because God wants us to not because we want to? But, I do think that we should also want to do the right thing. But, it’s much easier for us to sin, but when we don’t sin because of God/Jesus, than doesn’t that mean we should feel as though we have to avoid sin?

That is like saying why you wouldn’t commit adultery.

Because it would crush your wife?
Because it would hurt God?
Because you are destined (at that point) to go to Hell?

Should you pick one, two or three of these options?

I would pick all three but anyone one would do.

Just try to avoid sin for God, for your soul and others who may copy you.

I hope it wasn’t my post that confused you. I meant I know people who HAVE chosen not to sin or avoid a sin because it makes tyhem feel guilty or feel negatively about themselves. I believe they felt that there was some “loss of closeness” in their relationship with God and that was what made them feel so miserable. They wanted to do right and stop doing wrong because they acknowledged how far they had fallen.

Oh no, it wasn’t your post; it was someone else’s, But, I do think you are right about people feeling guilty because there is a loss of closeness to God.

I think Nelka summed it up nicely!
For me personally, sinning means that I disappoint my heavenly Father, which to me is heartbreaking. It’s not so much the fear of hell, as it is the knowledge that I have caused God sadness by sinning, and that makes me feel absolutely horrible. That alone is enough to keep me in line… most of the time, anyway.
