Awkward about wearing a mantilla

Wearing a mantilla is a very good thing. It’s a form of respect and love to our Lord. I know when I wear my long scarf, as I haven’t gotten my Mantilla yet, just the fact that I have my head covered, (and we use to years ago) makes me feel like I am pleasing our Lord.

I have once or twice since forgot my scarf and felt “naked” without my head covered.

I laughed when I read some felt “naked” without a head covering on! I thought it was just me! I’ve been wearing my scarf for a while and now it just doesn’t feel right to me to enter church without my head covered. I also have a backup in the car just in case.

Anyway, at the Mass I attend, most ladies don’t wear any covering, but those that do use several options: mantilla, chapal caps, scarves, and hats. No-one’s ever made a fuss and people are very kind.

No one wears a headcovering in my little parish. During the winter, I did get accustomed to wearing some hats a cut above the winter knit that I embelished myself. I loved it. I was hiding behind the idea that it was a winter hat for the cold. It was nice, because you freeze inside our church and I kept warmer. I thought I would evolve to some summery straw type hats, but then unexpectedly lost all nerve. So this summer I only used hats at the TLM when I attended. I have always wanted to cover and just can’t get over it! I am in my 50’s but a convert, so don’t have a history.

Just make sure that everything else is appropriate; wearing a head cover is nice, but redundant if you dressed immodestly or inappropriately.

Last week I attended Mass at a different parish and smiled when I saw a woman wearing a head covering. That smile quickly faded, however, when I saw the rest of her attire. Her blouse showed more of her body than it covered, and her dress was so thin you could see the color of her underpants.

The worst part, however, was when I realized that she was an EMHC, and my row was directed to her to receive the Holy Eucharist. The ushers would not let anyone jump lines either. It was horrible.

What’s an EMHC?

EMHC = Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Catholic laity, when properly trained, assist the priest with the distribution of Holy Communion if there are a lot of people receiving. They are only supposed to be used if there is an abnormally large attendance but every parish around here uses them every Sunday.

So hopefully you can see my concern when I went to receive Holy Communion from this person who was wearing a mantilla, but was showing a lot of cleavage and you could see what kind of underwear she was wearing.

Thanks for the recommendation! My husband and I really enjoyed his videos and explanations on the TLM. It’s always nice to hear different ways of explaining it.

You must not be concerned about making others feel “awkward” about your wearing a mantilla. For instance, you may stay after Mass to say additional prayers, while others rush out or chat in back of the Church (and in the case of chatting - very inconsiderate). You’re doing what you feel is respectful to God. That’s what you’re there for - not to please others. God and Our Lady bless you.
