My wife and I tested the waters in a mega non-denom bible only church in our area. The man is a very nice, but quiet man…awkward actually, nothing like our priests.
Back in October 2006 after getting our fill of that flavor for about 5 months we learned of ancient documents that still exsisted and began reading them. We discovered the ancient church fathers and knew we had to find an apostolic church…Orthodox or Catholic was all I knew, and chose to look at both. I had been Catholic [meaning I thought I wasnt’ Catholic anymore]. I sent an email back then retracting our membership and gave reasons. His response was strange, but ecumenical in nature so we took it well. The youth minister was really bazaar and I constantly have to protect children from his proselytizing. Catholic children that he’s trying to get them to accept Jesus in their hearts. We’ve never not believed that baptism is not necessary. So our membership was really conditioned on finding peace in a congregation that was not pushing prosperity theology or proselytizing others. We were church of Christ that had been beat over the head one too many times, heart broken.
We went in the grocery story, ran into the elder and his wife. They both did an initial double take, but didn’t recognize who we were, or at least they acted like it. But the wife looked at the Catholic Seminary Logo on my jacket and did a double take on it. Light confusing …wierd exchange of friendly words. Well about 5 minutes in the store I passed her she looked towards me and then as I passed she seemingly purposefully looked in the air the other way. I think I was snobbed off as a dirty papist.
Not to sound judgmental, but that reaked of very strange. Most Catholics would have looked at me and smiled. I seem to draw attention without even trying because I have a natural propensity to be cheerful… I’ve been told I look like a priest many times in my life. That is wierd too, so what does a priest look like or is it the spiritual aspect that makes my outward appearance seem so …priestly. All baptized Christian share in Christ’s inheritance as priest, prophet and king.
