Well, this was at a Sunday, 9am Mass after a Red Sox game that went on until 1 in the morning…
I (the lector) was standing in the vestibule with the two altar servers, the priest and deacon. Now, the two of them had stayed up to watch the whole game and were practically falling asleep standing up…red in the eyes and everything.
The choir, also, had started singing the opening hymn before the bell to signify the start of mass was won. As Father said while rifling through the hymnal, “Darn (not what he said, but it wasn’t that bad), is that the opening hymn?!” then, to our deacon…“Ring the bell, make them start over!”
The 5 of us, including the priest had to refrain from laughter as we proceeded in.
