Just to forewarn, I may ramble on a bit but there are certain things I need to get off my chest. I’ll try to be as brief as possible…

Things between me and my older sister (she’s 24 years old) are becoming increasingly awkward and tense; not just between me and her but the whole family is starting to go a little nuts.
Why is this you ask? Well, long story short, she is convinced that she will, singlehandedly, bring all the churches together…and in order to do that, the first step, in her mind, is to be initiated into as many churches as possible. She’s already making plans to become baptized into the Mormon church…Thing is, she’s made it very clear that she doesn’t see it as “converting” to another faith, but just joining it. She fully intends to still go to Mass and receive Communion despite this o_o She says it’ll inspire others if she tells one church that she’s ALSO attending another; that she can in some way be the middle man or something.

Me, my parents, we’ve talked about the MANY issues with this plan, numerous times; contradicting doctrines (she says she can believe EVERY doctrine of EVERY religion, what??), the serious sin of receiving Communion as an apostate (then she says “who says it’s a sin?”), the biblical proof of ONE true church, etc. Nothing we say to her gets through to her.

For one thing, she’s been talking to this non-denominational Christian friend of ours over the phone who may or may not be putting certain ideas in her head. Thing is, even if it was just the hint of an idea, I think she has taken certain ideas proposed to her and just ran wild with them.

For an example, this friend of ours has been teaching her about things which come from the prosperity gospel, and now my sister thinks that you can get whatever you want if you believe “hard enough”. She talks about things like wanting to own a huge mansion, marry a “hot” guy, having gorgeous looking children, and some rather crazy things as well (like having an amusement park in her home). Not that it wouldn’t be cool, but…I don’t know. Her beliefs have just about flipped upside down from what they were, even to a more harmful extent. She was talking about it being ok to have sex before marriage (Adam and Eve didn’t have a “wedding”, right?) and that it would be fine for her husband to marry more than one!

…In short, she came to one, very mislead conclusion about the Bible: “It teaches that everything is ok”.

Um, no! How did you even come to that conclusion? What are the 10 commandments even for?? Also, she has this whole “if it doesn’t hurt anyone else, than it’s A ok” mentality now. It’s kind of crazy. When she was younger, she would be shocked at what she believes now. She feels like a different person almost. One one hand, she went through a lot of mental struggles with people in the past (she has Aspergers) and was depressed all the time. Now, she seems to be all giggles and smiles on the outside at least, but she won’t admit that she has a problem. She is a bit manic as well. She doesn’t want medicine or counseling and seems to think she is right as rain!

Not to mention she just…has this “high and mighty” arrogance about her a lot of times. This shows up most when she’s talking to my parents; comparing their IQ to zero (often saying things like “you just don’t understand how smart I am”), claiming she is “her own authority” in discerning scripture, claiming that our interpretations are not from God but man, and other such things.

I cringe every time she starts a conversation about…almost anything, actually. I don’t talk to her much anymore, but the way she goes about talking to my parents about not having a job and “working hard” to find one (she stays in bed for a good portion of the day and spends most of her evenings partying with friends), and any mention about religion inevitably leads to a heated discussion.

But her arrogance towards my parents really irks me. She often ridicules them for not raising her well enough, blaming everyone for her problems, it makes me sick sometimes. I once told her few days ago while she was practically bullying my parents with her words “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” and she’s all like “that’s funny coming from you” “What? What did I do??” “You’re siding with them.” “Yeah, because you’re crazy!”
It just slipped out because it makes me angry the way she treats them; being utterly ungrateful for how good she has it. Was it wrong for me to call her crazy? I still feel bad for saying it…but the truth is, I don’t know if I should apologize for it. I feel bad but in the end, I do believe she IS crazy. My mom was raised in a bad household when she was young. Thank goodness for our great Aunt for taking her in, but it goes to show you that it could’ve been worse! Have some gratitude!

I just don’t know what to do besides pray for her.

Any thoughts or advice about this would be appreciated. Prayers, as well.

she sounds immature and confused. it could just be a phase she is going through. continue to pray for her.

Does she know that people will leave the church (and any other religion they may have if not Catholic also) if they listen to her, and they will not follow her either, but go their own way as individuals who have no religion?

If a person thinks everything and anything is okay, they do not follow but walk out on their own wherever their imagination leads them. Instead of uniting everyone into one, she will (if she were successful in her plan) separate everyone into being fully alone with no community of faith. Joining the Mormons if you do not believe you are one of them singularly keeps you separate from them, not one of them, and eventually they will themselves exclude you for speaking such strange teachings. Prosperity religions will exclude you if you tell them about receiving the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass, because that is disgusting (or at least folly) to believe such “nonsense”. Etc.

She will discover all this over time, or if she thinks about it ahead of time. Right now God is an “Idea” to her, and a process. Not a real person, Jesus, whom she listens to and obeys.

I think it’s time for you to tell your parents that your sister needs to visit a doctor. There could be a chemical imbalance that is making her have delusions of grandeur and manic thoughts… If your sister acts on any of her ideas, it could be harmful to her.

Would she consider sitting down and sharing her " ideas" with the local priest?
If she says “who says?” again, maybe you could point her to a person who would definitively and authoritatively say just “who says”.

She sounds like she needs to see a Doctor as well. Maybe some secular arguments might be helpful. For example:
Can one be a Veterinarian AND a Ophthalmologist? No? Why not by your logic? I mean, aren’t all doctors, doctors? How about language? If one can speak Mandarin, why can’t they just speak French easily? I mean, communication is all the same, right?
NO.
Religions are not like outfits. You can’t just take one off and put another one on your heart just like that. People spend a lot time studying. She really knows nothing about other faiths, Mormonism, for example. She has no idea what she’s toying with. And believe me, they will insist that she stay with them alone, They will not go for this drifting around notion.
Why are there divisions, categories, and sects in the first place?
Because people drift. Tell her she has drifted into illogical thinking. Even the people with the oddest beliefs will not be convinced by her words. Everyone has to drill down to their core beliefs. And for the record, nearly all faiths believe that parents are due utmost respect and care. If she tosses that out the window, she has nothing to offer anyone. Call it what it is: Vanity. She herself cannot be all things to all people. There’s only ONE that can do that.

God bless, and I’ll pray for the situation. I know it must be very difficult for your folks as well. 😦

Does she still live with your parents? Does she have a job? It does sound like mental illness. She should see a doctor before it gets any worse. I would not talk or debate religion with her. She is simply in in error about that.

This might sound strange, but is there any chance she could have fallen in with Scientologists? I ask because they will often claim to be “all denominational” and say that you can fully believe the truth of every religion. They see themselves as great unitors. At 24, she’s about the age they target. Scientologists are obsessive about IQ, and one of their first tricks is to convince a recruit that their friends and family just don’t understand because they aren’t as uniquely brilliant as the recruit. They teach that wanting things hard enough (combined with giving money to the “church” of course) will lead to material wealth. And Scientologists are always happy. Annoyingly happy. Irrationally happy regardless if the circumstances.

This is just one relatively unlikely scenario, but as dangerous as Scientologists are, it’s worth mentioning.

I couldn’t quite make it through all of that (like you I was cringing too hard),but I think your sis probably needs to be evaluated for mental illness. Talk to your parents about that possibility.

I agree with the above posters. It sounds like she could use some counseling. Considering this is a major shift in attitude and behavior, it’s a red flag for a deeper emotional or mental illness. The trick is getting her to see someone, since she is no longer a minor.

Don’t let this upset you. religion should be the least of your worries for her. She sounds like she needs to see a psychiatrist. The late teens and twenties are the roughest time in a mentally ill persons life. Since she is an adult and cannot be forced to see a doctor, just be ready when something happens. If she is mentally ill something will happen.

She sounds bipolar. She needs medical help imo. And prayer, pray the Rosary for her. Our Lady smashes heresy.👍

I have a sister who behaves this way.

Delusions of grandeur.
Alternating between being extremely exuberant and sleeping all day.
Confused thinking and an apparent inability to reason.

My sister is seriously mentally ill and has had to be hospitalized several times. She has bipolar disorder (manic depression) and borderline personality disorder. It became apparent around the age of 20, although signs were there before.

Please speak to your parents soon about the possibility that your sister is mentally ill.

And I know that you feel bad for calling your sister crazy, but the reality is that much of what you describe about her attitudes and actions is crazy, even though the word itself might be objectionable in certain contexts. But mentally ill people are often a danger to themselves and others. We wouldn’t think of leaving a person with cancer untreated. A mental illness can also progress and lead a person to tragedy.

I am so sorry that this is happening to your sister. I hope she soon gets the help she needs.

👍😊🤷

Totally agree. She is in one heck of a manic phase, the down crash will be even worse than this. Another possibility might be schizophrenia, she is in the right age group and religious delusions are not uncommon for schizophrenics.

On the one hand, I kind of admire her desire and passion to “bring all the churches together.” At least she has a noble motive 🙂

If she’s saying she can believe every doctrine of every religion…then she could also be saying to you all that she does not believe that one church has “the answer” or “the truth”…and it looks like she’s questioning *all *of them, all at once.
Existential crisis, galore.
And for some theists, when they start thinking that what they’ve been taught for so many years is wrong…they get angry and feel duped by those closest to them. She sounds very angry at your parents.

On the other hand…she may just be searching for what she believes in…and is caught up in the emotions of breaking free on her own and feeling her own power and separating from the family, etc. More like a teenager might when they go thru this phase. If she skipped a rebellion-separation phase as a teen, this could be it now.

On the other hand again…when you say she’s “run wild” with it and describe past depression and current laying in bed all day plus “mania” with giggles and smiles…I agree with some other posters that there is a chance something chemical is going on.

Bi-polar often hits people in their early twenties and religious zeal or obsession is sometimes a symptom. I saw it happen with a friend of mine at the exact same age.

I wish you could get her for a consult with a doctor…but as you say, she won’t go.
For now. If there is something chemically wrong, it may need to get worse before she agrees to see a doctor.
Let’s hope she’s just going through a transitional time and it will all level out for her in a bit of time.
.
An intellectual can hold and entertain conflicting ideas in their heads. But attempting to live out multiple, opposing ideologies all at once? That’s a mental health problem (or Scientologists).

I don’t understand how this plan is possible. The whole reason of the existence of multiple branches is that they all have contradictory teachings and don’t agree with one another. How can she bring all of these churches together if a multitude of them disagree on many critical beliefs?

I hear ya. But seems she hasn’t actually “joined” any other churches yet, just talked about it. If she’s of a dramatic nature, she might just be all talk and trying to get a reaction out of everyone?

I’m curious, tho, if she actually goes thru with her grand plan.
It’s pretty creative, I give her that.

.
Nah, it is not that creative. I am pretty sure I saw a episode of The Journey home on EWTN once where a guy had already became Catholic in his heart but he stood in the Anglican Church for a awhile kind of as a undercover to try to convert people in their beliefs to becoming Catholic. Not on the same dramatic level as this young lady is claiming to do but he did something somewhat similar. Stood in a denomination he did not really believe in anymore for the sake of converting others. Maybe he did it partly out of some unresolved doubts too (just my guess) but the op’s sister is not that creative. Her idea is crazy. Not creative.

Well when people lose touch with reality their ideas do not have to make sense. They will call everyone else in the world crazy before they realize that they are the crazy ones.

Do not bother to reason with her. It does not sound like it will work and you will just drive yourself crazy. It sounds like she has a mental problem. Maybe temporary psychosis? Could she possibly be on drugs? I went through a phase for a few months about 12 years ago when I was a drug user where I think I went through temporary psychosis and I though I was on a mission from God and also started believing everything was basically permissible because I heard that “Once saved, always saved” and since I said the sinners prayer when I was 6, I was saved and could not lose my salvation no matter what I did. I think It was temporary psychosis. Thanks be to God I snapped out of it eventually and have been mentally sane ever since (Sometimes that can be debatable though 😛 ) I have been clean 7 years btw and other than possibly increasing my OCD symptoms, I have recovered pretty much completely from my drug use. I hope your sister is not on drugs but it sounds like she might be.

If I was her parent and she lived with me, I would demand she see a doctor. If she does not live with me, I would have no control over her. But how does she support herself if she does not work? I would bluff and tell her “If you do not see a doctor, you are out of here” But that is kind of where my plan would end. So I really have no advice. I will say a prayer. God bless.

P.S. I snipped your original post because I was over the sites word limit on this post.
