I’m at college, and many times I’m walking with my girlfriend and even when I’m with her guys may whistle or make suggestive comments.

What’s the Catholic response? I know that in todays culture I’m supposed to challenge the other guy to fight, but that’s not Catholic-like at all. I’m really not the type of guy that has a quick tongue and has some witty thing to say right at that moment, so trying to make a ‘comeback’ would also seem stupid, low and equally unCatholic.

Anybody know what I should do in that situation? Just walk away or say ‘thats rude’ or what?

How does your girlfriend react? Maybe she could tell the guys herself to stop talking to her like that.

However you have to be careful because sometimes people are trying to provoke you and reacting can just encourage them to continue. Try ignoring them, but if the same people have the same behaviour more than once, you could let them now calmly that they are disrespecting your girlfriend when they act like that.

If you feel you would not end up in a fight you could ask them not to speak or behave that way in front of a lady. Avoid them if you can. Turn the other cheek but if they go out of their way too much and cross the line too far you may have to strongly insist they stop. So long as it’s a fair fight. Sometimes you have to be a man when people push you too far. Pray for them too. Resentments kill the soul but praying for them kills the resentments.

Make sure that both of you are dressed modestly. If the Blessed Virgin Mary and Jesus lived today, would they dress and carry themselves the way the two of you do?

I’m not saying that the whistles and suggestive comments are ever justified, nor that it’s her fault. But in a society where everything in the media is screaming “SEX!”, you and your girlfriend can be models of a different way of thinking.

One way is to ignore them, or you could wave at them and say Sorry fellows this beautiful lady is already taken, better luck next time. Eat your heart out. IF it is done in a good natured way, it shouldn’t provoke a fight.

Some guys may be trying to provoke you, but some are only doing it to have fun (at your expense) so if you laugh it off they may just get a good laugh and move on.

And it may be that your girlfriend is a ‘really beautiful gal’ and these guys are really envious, trying to embarass you/and her. Thank your lucky stars that she is your girlfriend and not someone elses. So just ignore them or wave or say “Sorry, she’s already with me”.

It’s Catholic-like to defend her honor. If all they do is whistle, then walking by without comment is sufficient. But if they make rude/suggestive comments, then it’s up to you to decide what the best response would be without first resorting to violence; you should, however, be prepared for a violent response to whatever you say in defense of your girlfriend.
