Arizona Catholic Diocese Bans Politicians Who Support Abortion

**Phoenix, AZ (LifeNews.com) – **If you’re an elected official or political candidate in Arizona who backs abortion, don’t look for a speaking engagement at a Catholic church in Phoenix. The diocese there has decided to disallow giving a platform to any political figure who supports abortion, which is contrary to church teachings.

Thus far, Gov. Janet Napolitano is the only one who has been affected by Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted’s decision.

Last year, Napolitano was forbidden from speaking at a Catholic church in Scottsdale about a state ballot measure unrelated to abortion. Church officials moved the event elsewhere.

Olmsted, in a letter to parish priests in December, said churches may not invite any pro-abortion politicians to speak at churches within the diocese.

An invitation “would provide them with a platform which would suggest support for their actions,” Olmsted wrote.

Napolitano, a Methodist, told the Associated Press she was not aware of the ban but had heard about the letter.

Omsted’s decision is in line with a document approved by the U.S. Catholic bishops last summer that also calls on Catholic colleges and universities not to give a platform to elected officials who back abortion.

“Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles,” the bishops said. “They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

The statement, which also calls on pro-abortion Catholics to refrain on their own from taking communion, was adopted by a vote of 183-6 last summer.

In July, the Vatican produced a new document for bishops across the world to examine that says Catholics who support legalized abortion should refrain from taking communion because they are out of step with church teachings.

Are we talking about speaking to church members, on church property? I think that could get pretty tricky legally if they regulated the discussion by participant rather than by subject.

I do not think it would matter. The diocese has complete control (although they do not exercise it) of who talks and what can be talked about. The courts have no say.

Being a former member of the Diocese of Phoenix, I applaud Bishop Olmsted. I knew when he took over and began standing outside abortion clinics and leading the rosary, he would be a Bishop to be reckoned with.
Boy oh boy, is this going to infuriate some people, many of whom I know.
And there will be many who will feel exactly as I do. Hopefully, more Bishops will take his lead.

My concern is financial, I guess. Here in Kansas there are some groups who are going around attending Church as “spies” so they can “catch” them endorsing candidates to bring a lawsuit against churches. They’re trying to catch them giving specific voting advice, I guess, as opposed to just general principles.

I’m not sure if it’s state or federal, but I think it’s a federal law that says something to the effect we can speak about issues but not endorse candidates. It is not an issue of free speech or practice of religion. Apparently it is some contingency of having tax exempt status.

So far the church has pushed this envelope pretty hard, and frankly I have heard names named during sermons, probably in violation of IRS regulations, but even in today’s political climate a federal suit to take away tax exempt status of a Catholic Church could very end up a political liability.

God Bless Bishop Olmstead. His rewards will be great in Heaven. 👍 👍

It is probably easier for Bp. Olmsted to do this because his diocese is generally slightly more politically conservative than some liberal dioceses which really need provisions like this. St. Michael, pray for courage in our bishops! Amen.
