Babies At Mass

St Theresa comes to mind. She was distracted by another sisters rosary beads. She used this to further her holiness which I would suggest others do with distracting children.

I have known two priest who handled this situation.
The first priest was annoyed that he was distracted in his homely by children making noise. It was just little cooings done once but there were a lot of babies and so it seemed to him a great distraction. I actually heard none of it and was engrossed in his homily. As the people filed out, they congratulated him on a great homily. It was one of the best I heard from him.

The second priest has a screaming at the top of his lungs child. The parents were doing the best they could. They were in the cry room and finally left the Church. The priest went on with his homely as if there were silence and his comment “Wasn’t it nice to have a child at Mass” We rarely see anyone under 50. :crying:

I have at points in my life taken our kids to daily Mass. The people in attendance absolutely loved having them there even if they did become noisy at times…they often came to me after Mass with glowing remarks about the presence of children at daily Mass. It is rare, yet there are still some people who love seeing kids at Mass, even when they are not perfect angels. The Priests used to laugh and say that the kids were simply trying to help him say Mass, he loved having them and was filled with joy with their presence.

My family attends the Tridentine mass every Sunday. We have 3 children, one is a toddler, the other an infant. I try VERY HARD to be considerate of the other people at mass, and keep my kids in the pews with me to learn how to behave. When they need to be taken to the back, that’s where I take them. However, here are a few thinking points for everyone:
  1. So when did they invent the cry room? How many centuries (or millenia) did Christians worship successfully without them? Hmmmm…wonder what the parents of all the saints did with their unruly Pios and Tereses when they acted up.
  2. The traditional mass attracts traditional Catholics. Read: LARGE FAMILIES WITH LOTS OF LITTLE KIDS. This is the crowd you’re going to find there, and no matter how hard the parents try, there are going to be at least a couple of kids at each mass who make some noise. When parents take the kids to the back of the church, they make even more noise.
  3. A lot of the time those squealing kids are the younger siblings of boys serving on the altar.
  4. Two parents with lots of little ones (it is very common at my church to see families with 5 under 5 or 4 under 4) might spend zero time in the pew if they had to get up every time one of their kids did something to distract another person. Not fair to the family to expect that.
  5. (This is my biggie) Why dump on parents of little kids? What about the parents of teenagers who let their kids go to mass in belly shirts, flip flops, shorts, etc, or dressed in skin tight clothing leaving nothing to the imagination? Let me tell you something, those are much worse distractions than the happy babbling (albeit loud) of a child.
BTW, every cry room I’ve ever been in was filled mostly w/adults WITH NO KIDS. It seems to be the favored seating for latecomers. So where are parents supposed to go with their kids now? Outside on the street?

Shortly before we stopped attending the novus ordo mass in our local parish, at one particullar mass, my then 18 mo old daughter sang loudly along during one of the sung mass parts (I can’t remember which). A nasty elderly woman hollered over “Shut that kid up!” My daughter was singing happily with all the adults, but this woman singled her out. Some people just don’t want to hear a peep out of a kid, and automatically get defensive and hostile when they see a kid in the pew near them who is anything livelier than comatose. They think they raised their kids perfect and anyone else is wrong. I’ll never forget that nasty old woman. I feel much more welcome at the Tridentine mass, where children are appreciated and PARENTS ARE SUPPORTED!!!

One more thing:

I have yet to see a child that needs to be removed from the pew not be removed by the parent. I have never seen a parent ignore a noisy kid at mass.

Where we disagree is this pervasive attitude of “knowing others” on this thread. The bottom line is we just cannot know what is going on with our nieghbor during Mass. The parent might have gotten horrible news just before going to Mass, but felt that being with the Lord is exactly what they needed at that moment, it could be cancer, a dying loved one, a lost job, a sick child, any number of difficult things can lead grown adults to not be fully on the task of watching their kids as closely as they should. There is no way to know if those parents have circumstances that lead them to partially disengage, or are they just lousy parents. Since we cannot know their lives, we must give love rather then hate! We must sow compassion, rather then bitterness; sow understanding rather then misplaced correction.
Thank you, Tom! I just typed and then deleted a rant about this very sentiment. What you describe can be found in the Prayer of St. Francis and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

“seek first to understand, then to be understood”

I’m biting my tongue now, that’s all!

Well…that means it doesn’t happen…because it surely does! that is what really ticks me off are parents who know their children are misbehaving and DO NOTHING!! As for the woman who yelled for you to shut your kid up…that is over the top too and we have extremes on both sides. That doesn’t make either right. Heck, I would love to see a child who was singing…much better than crying and whining and being ignored by the parents. You stated that you try very hard to be considerate…that itself separates you from a portion of those who are oblivious.

Tom…you may feel my example is laughable and over the top, but for fact…it happens and it is very rude and frustrating.

**I find this interesting because we have a 2 1/2 little boy and we always sit off to the side in the alcove. We dislike the cry room because my son has harder time behaving in there.

However the minute he starts to misbehave we take him out side and he then loses a toy that gets put up on the shelf when he gets home.

Its amazing to me that when we use to attend the Byzantine Church (before we had our son) and we went that quite a bit. There were many large families there and I never saw they’re children have to be taken out, throwing food etc that i have seen at various Catholic Churches.

I agree that we should be respectful of the people around us. If my child is making noise i know that it makes it hard for people to focus.I haven’t read anyone on this thread that has said that there shouldn’t be children allowed at mass, it just seems that some want parents to be more parental. By letting the child carry on IMHO it teaches the child that you don’t need to be conscious of how other people are feeling around you…**

There are many children who are much easier to train on church behavior than other. I’ve had both. With my oldest I would see other children who would sit quietly in church and wonder what I was doing wrong, because my child would not do this. I tried everything that has been suggested on this board and way more in disciplining and teaching him good church behavior. Oh we never ignored his behavior! He is a very active and talkative child for whom sitting still and being quiet is very difficult. No he does not have ADD or ADHD. It is just how God made him. He was the one who crawled under the pew. If you held him, then he screamed, yelled loudly or twisted himself into a pretzel until you about dropped him. He was taken out of church so much I wasn’t sure we had fulfilled our Sunday obligation. Thankfully standing in the vestibule counts. It wasn’t until about age 6-7 that he had enough self-control to exhibit good church behavior. Now I have another child who from day one has had good church behavior. Even at a young age at the most we took him out once. Just because it appears to you that the parents aren’t doing their job, it might not be the case.

In any case the only behavior any individual has any control over (and this includes parents) is their own. So if you don’t like what you see, find a way to alter your behavior. Be helpful instead of critical. Pray instead of judge. Give thanks that they at least care enough to bring the children to church. So many children never go. Ignore instead of getting angry. Not everyone is at the same place in their spiritual journey, but we are to love them anyway. What I find helpful when I encounter people I find hard to love is to remind myself God loves them just as they are and just as much as He loves me. He wants them in Heaven too and maybe He wants me to help them on their journey.

If you are having a lot of anger surrounding this issue, it might be helpful to talk to a spiritual advisor.

Awesome points, all of them! I will add one:
  1. How about the adults who are sitting right behind families with small children and procede to smile and play with the small children, which just causes the children to be more excited? Are we to attack those adults because they enjoy kids and sort of lose themselves in the moment, even though they contributed to the children’s misbehaivor? Or, should we just happily acknowledge in our hearts that those adults love children?

No doubt it happens, I have no reason to not believe you. Yet, in all my years (I am no youngling) and the thousands of times I have attended Mass across many parishes, and during vacations in different locations, hospital chapels, etc…I have never even one time seen a child throw food…not once! Plus, I have never heard that from any Catholic I know, and I know many Catholics.

Therefore, while I believe you that it happens, it is VERY rare and is really not part of this conversation because I do not know anyone that would defend such an act. Finally, the OP was not talking about such ridiculous and obviously horrible behaivor.

I do know that there are an awful lot of things adults do on a regular basis there are far worse then a crying child, and yet no-one seems to care about those issues and those same adults often have no children with them at all.

As I said before, we simply do not know where other people are in their lives, we serve Christ much more fully when we stop being angry with other people and when we worry about the planks in our own eyes.

This world is completely hostile to children, and like it or not there is a certain level of hostility present in this thread towards children…and this being done by Catholics!

I don’t often post but I’m amazed by everyone’s attitude.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that it’s not the kids but the unwatched behavior that’s the problem. Posters need to take a breath and realize that everyone agrees on this.

Everyone also agrees that kids are kids. They make noise. Short of the first troll poster, no one said kids aren’t welcome. Posters need to take a breath and realize that.

But the most important thing is the “judgemental” accusation.
The posters that are accusing others of being “judgemental” of parents and putting in the silly “perfect” label being thrown around. Realize that the judgement is going both ways. The guy with the kids with problems HAS it tough and the rest are just assumptions. When you assume, either with compassion or distain, you make an “a” out of you and me.

Let’s agree on this. Everyone can be bugged by noice. You’re fooling yourself if you say you aren’t. If you watch your kids, stop accusing others of being bothered by their noise. That’s not what they are saying. And by you accusing them of that, you are being judgemental yourself.

If you see someone who continually is ignoring their children, you parents who do stop this with your own kids, help everyone out and don’t dismiss with compassion. Those parents needs guidance. Otherwise you are wrong in enabling their behavior.

You are correct, no-one has said kids are not welcome, yet that is the impression that is being given. As a parent, I am already quite sensitive about my kids behaivor and these sorts of threads do nothing but make me not want to bring my kids to Mass at all because I do not want all the perfect parents mad at me (of course I will continue bringing them even though my kids and I are not perfect). These sorts of attitudes causes me to feel a great deal of stress everytime I walk into Mass because I know there plenty of people out there that are just like some people on this thread…they are all too ready to condemn and judge parenting styles without having a clue about me or my wife or my kids.

I will say this again: the world is completely hostile to children, and Europe is so very hostile to kids that they no longer bother having children and you can rest assured that people in European Churches rarely ever have to be disturbed by a crying baby. Maybe that is the way things will go here as well, I pray not.

30-40 years there were many more kids and they cried every bit as much as they do today and there were just as many parents who did not watch their children (small percentage then and a small percentage now). The difference is today we have a certain group of Catholics who are Uber-Catyholics (nearly perfect in every way) and they seem to feel that they must be so focused during Mass that there is no room for a crying baby. I have experienced this firsthand in several Churches, in which people give my wife and I dirty looks with even the slightest cry from one of our babies…it is a sickening reality of Catholic life today that adults increasingly have no patience for children or babies, despite the fact that many adults behave much worse then the children do.

Okay,
Here’s the deal.

We young families with babies, toddlers or any age kids need to be seen, heard and celebrated. **Just like the **tabernacle they want to put us in a closet off to the side, an ISOLATION CHAMBER!

The Plan: We will call it Humanae Vitae Sunday. We will spread out throughout the church the front, the middle, the back and those who arrive late without kids(no excuse by the way) will have to sit in the vacant “Cry Room” and watch our happy and sometimes noisy families from the glass window. As we wave to them from our seats they will strain to hear the homily. During Communion they will bashfully emerge from the isolation chamber for a brief moment of ecclesial union and then dutifully return.

We will wear buttons with pictures of Pope Paul VI and JPII on them. Buttons that say Long Live Humanae Vitae, Kids are Good, or “Let the Children Come To Me!”, Pro-Life-Pro Family.

We will “Take Back Our Church”, from the anti-family Fanatics!👍 😛 👍

Sir, meaning no disrespect, but the only person who seems to see this as Anti-child is you. And even those posters who have gotten rude with you have conceded that you are probably not who they are talking about. Maybe a bit of love thy enemy shoud be thought of too.

The world is not antichild but maybe your area is and so you are defensive. Please put yourself into other’s shoes to whom you Dis agree. My mom would stop going to church if everyone overlooked the kids misbehaving for a long time. It’s easy to say that it’s my moms problem but that doesn’t change how she is. Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me. Those that are bothered, are the least too. Being 80 makes her childish sometimes, but you don’t seem to be helping her situation, just helping those who have children. She did her time raising her kids. Now she is a bit cranky, but is God’s child as well.

Wouldn’t it be better to help all of those who are having trouble? You help those parent’s who are not watching their kids, you know how. For those that are bothered, maybe seeing someone put in an effort will soften their hearts.
That’s what Jesus would do.

Tom…while I do NOT care at all if you believe me or not…it happenbs and it DOES belong on this thread because it is an example of parents who do not take charge of their children. I understand you would like to think it doesn’t happen and therefore you could ignore it. Like I said it is an example of out of control behavior and parents who have no control over their children.

I don’t believe this world is hostile to children and this thread does not indicate that in the least. I have not seen anyone who has said they do not like children. Maybe they do not like their behavior and the lack of parental concern. What a shame for you to miscontrue what peolple have said ing good faith. Does that make you feel better about your position by making others the bad guys?

I said in my first post on this thread that I love kids. I do…I do not always like their behavior and that is up to the parents to correct.

Tsk Tsk Tom…

I am frustrated because this thread does indeed reflect an anti-child attitude, it makes no impact on me that you do not see that. I do not see people here as my enemy, and yet I still love them and all people…I just think they are flat wrong about their harsh attitudes. I have lived this personally, having frequent experience with the modern Uber-Catholics who seem to think they are nearly perfect, and there are several people on this thread that appear to be those type of people. I pray for them and love them independent of their harsh anti-child stance.

The world is most definitely anti-child. Nearly every industrialzed country is now below replacement birth rates or very close and Europe is a dying place, with the United States not terribly far behind (2.0 is replacement, we are at 2.2). People are not having kids and in my opinion that is evidence of hostility towards life. Every single child is a blessing from God, not a curse, that is every child. While it is without doubt a difficulty when kids misbehave at Mass, it is a reality of life and it is a reality of large families–which is exactly what the Catholic faith is, one large family.

It is beyond ridiculous to say “if everyone overlooked the kids misbehaving for a long time,” because I never once said everyone, in fact I have made it very clear that the misbehaving kids are a small percentage, not large and that people should be more loving, understanding and welcoming to those families and kids. No-one gets a “I can be crabby towards others because I earned it card.” No-one has permission to intentionally be crabby towards others. Jesus calls all of us to have love and compassion for others and that includes those parents who might not watch their kids closely enough.

Frankly, parents who have been there and raised kids already have no excuse to be crabby because they know it is not easy and it is far more difficult today then it was 30-40 years ago when the vast majority of Moms were stay-at-home parents. Today, we have broken homes, abusive parents, dual income families, materialism run rampant, a culture that teaches kids are worthless and should be aborted or contracepted, a culture who sees kids as a commodity or trophy rather then precious lives, a culture who teaches people to think of only themselves and not their neighbor, etc…all of which places stress on families and it is a near miracle that Catholic families even bother to go to Mass, and nowadays they have to contend with the self-righteous Uber-Catholics who expect them to behave perfectly.

BlyssfulDreamer,

–4,00,000 murdered babies each year.
–Hundreds of millions of babies contracepted each year.
–Couples “choosing” to have one child, perhaps two, because they do not want their personal lifestyles interupted.
–Divorce rates at incredible numbers with many parents placing their kids in the middle of the evil fray as weapons to get what they want out of the divorce.
–Kids stuffed in daycares across the land so that both parents can feel free to work in any manner they personally choose (admittely in some cases the two incomes are a must and in those cases there are few alternatives).
–Fathers who are absent in reality and in child support.
–Mothers who are absent in reality and in child support.
–Couples choosing to not get married even though they have kids and do not give a whit what impact that has on their children.
–Emryonic stem cell research and cloing coming to a town near you in the near future, allowing the killing of even more human lives.
–Catholics who think children must be perfect angels during Mass and give parents dirty looks when their kids let out even the smallest of cries…this has happened to me many times and I have seen it happen many times.
–Catholics who think baptism is increasingly just an option.
–Catholics who think teaching the faith is increasingly just an option.
on-and-on-and-on-and-on…

Sure, the world is not hostile to children.
