For a long time I have been greatly bothered by some advertisements of TV. They have these heart breaking ads on poor neglected animals. The background music is very touching. I have never seen an ad about aborted babies or babies who have been neglected by their parents.

I have a strong feeling that these same people asking for our help to save these animals also think that killing our little human beings is fine and a worthwhile help to save the world of over population.

I just can’t understand how anyone would place the value of an animal over the life of a human being. Of course we should take care of animals and not allow them to be harmed or neglected, but it seems to me that our nation has their priorities very confused.

This has been on my mind for a long time and wondered how others feel about this issue.

We have to also consider and understand that these ads and commercials are specifically designed to make you feel guilty and throw you emotionally off balance. If you feel sad and even angry, they’ve achieved the point they’ve tried to make, and if they can manipulate a person to feel that way just with showing a dog or cat with a voice over to make it sound like it’s talking to you, and the violins are playing in the background, then surely they can do it for an unborn child and imagine what that could do to a person. They don’t because to do so would make more people feel guilty about abortion right in their own living room (extremely uncomfortable), and it would show them the grim reality of it, and it would also be a victory for the pro-life movement as something like that, once imprinted in your mind, is hard to get rid of- exactly what the servants of the power behind abortion don’t want, so they don’t let it go through onto t.v. They want to throw at you so many things to think about and consider that you become distracted, divided and confused, to the point you pick and choose your battles. The enemy is clever. He confronts us with so many problems to solve that we end up choosing something else, ie- easier to save a dog or cat than to convince a human that killing an unborn child is wrong. So he tells us ‘just go for the dog, it’s the right thing to do, don’t worry about it, you can’t stop abortion, focus on this instead, it’ll make you feel better’. The lie is then turned inward and made to make you feel selfrighteous and contented that you’ve achieved a good and that it’s good enough for you, you needn’t face the most vital issues of our time, so long as you do something else.

Animals are God’s creatures as well, and they deserve to be treated with compassion also, but ads like this, while well-meaning and good are also used as a diversionary tactic. They want your time and energy on something else worthwhile so that priority #1 (in this case human life) seems like just another option from a myriad of options. They want you over-extended and morally exhausted so that you give in a little. The problem is, too many people have given in completely already. A good pro-life, anti-abortion commercial like how they do for the animal rights deal is just what we need to convert some of these people back, and to wake up many more!

The ASPCA is doing the devil’s work? Really? Is that really what you want to be saying?

I think it’s a false premise to set up right-to-life vs. animal “rights”. Sure, more resources should be directed toward pro(Human) life than are, but why not use the same tactics? Cute, adorable and vulnerable works.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of misguided folks out there who have…let’s charitably say “interesting” ideas about the notion of “animal rights”. But I don’t think that it’s fair to suggst that all those who work for the advancement of animal welfare do so at the neglect of babies. Perhaps that is their calling from the Almighty?

It is interesting how we can show gruesome war clips on the nightly news and that is just “news” and should not wear on our guilt. We can definitely hold contempt for a couple who abducts an eleven year old little girl, rapes her, fathers her two children and then keeps her captive for eighteen years. But mention abortion?? Heaven forbid! That is an invasion of pro-choice. That is an invasion of a person’s privacy! Really?

I have to agree that animal rights groups should not be considered when advancing the anti-abortion position. I do, however, realize the OP’s idea of contrasting the two. Our society needs to get on the ball and move out of the “gray areas” when it comes to taking a human life. Pregnancy is a stage of life for an individual and no life should be snuffed out at any stage.

We do need to take a greater stance on this brutal crime. This politically correct garbage needs to move aside and we need to address the reality of this form of murder.

Abortion does NOT make a woman unpregnant, it makes a woman the mother of a dead child… teachccd

I too think that this is wierd. I see those advertisements on tv, and then think of how little there is done about abortions. It is amazing how much radical left people are burning fur coat factories, protesting for animals for vote, want to let prisioners free and less harsh judges for criminals etc…and the same day going to a rally that supports the murder of the unborn. People need to get their priorities straightened out.
-Abortion: It’s a Human Rights issue that is against the first right: The right to life.

We have advertisements here about neglected or abused children, so I am not sure that there is no such thing. In fact probably more than the abused animal kind. An abortion advertisement would be more difficult on many levels, and I don’t think it has much to do with thinking animals are more important.

The fact that there are abused and neglected kids dose not mean that trying to get across that abusing or neglecting animals is wrong too is a bad thing, nor trying to help the animals in question. That’s a bit like saying since many people die of cancer, we shouldn’t spend effort or money on doing research for cataracts.

You might want to keep a few things in mind. Animal abusers are often child abusers too. And the SPCA and other animal shelters in many places in North America take care of animals that are stray, ill, and abandoned, abused, and has to gather the evidence to prosecute the abusers - both individuals and places like puppy mills, which are big business. And usually they do it with private funds - many cities give very little to help them, but have no other facilities to take care of these things. Think about what would happen if these shelters closed down, the outcry among people with stray cats in their yards or wherever, and consider that they need to get funding somehow.

I have to defer. It is not a question of babies versus animals. I am not sure whether photos of abortions would be permitted on television. My late mother always said that those who are cruel to animals are likely to be cruel to animals. I ,like many other animal lovers are pro life, all life.

I have to defer.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two, or to assume that you know the feelings of the ASPCA toward abortion.

These commercials are put out by the ASPCA and/or Humane Society of America. It is not their job to take a stance on abortion, it is their job to take a stance on the rights of animals.

I’m sorry if you don’t like them. I don’t like them myself, because they are so sad. I quickly change the channel as soon as they come on. But assuming that they are shown in place of a pro-life commercial or assuming that the ASPCA is saying that animals’ lives are more important than the lives of unborn children is making quite a leap, if you ask me.

For the record, it is not the ASPCA that commits violent acts in the name of animal rights. Most times, it is not ANY organized group, simply a collection of radicals. If anything, things like this could be attributed to PETA, but definitely NOT the ASPCA.

Both animal life and human life must be protected. However, human life is paramount in it’s need to be protected. The reason? We have immortal souls, animals do not. This does not, however, mean that we should not also work towards protecting neglected animals. However, if it comes down to choosing where your money should go first, I would definitely give to pro-life organizations first.

Hello, BernadetteM. You are right. I have long felt the same. When your house is on fire, you don’t take a break from dousing it with water in order to go and vacuum the living room. Well, our nation is a house on fire. The flames are abortion, and neglected dogs and cats are just so much dust on the living room floor, by comparison. (Preemptive disclaimer: I love dogs and cats.)

You cannot blame the humane societies for asking for donations. They have a job to do, and they’re doing it. But you can blame every Christian, and especially—since they ought to know better—every Catholic (and there are many) who will give and do more this year for “animal rights” than they will give and do for the many pro-life apostolates that are asking for their support and whose work is frankly more important.

But we shouldn’t blame, we should encourage instead. When Father Euteneuer or Father Pavone or one of the many others sends us an appeal, we should not throw it away. We should at least send them five bucks to help them reach a few more people, and more if possible. Then we can give to the humane societies with a clear conscience. (A dollar would seem like the the right proportion.)

One child in the womb is more than a million dogs, cats, or manatees. The procured death of a million children in the womb (or whatever the annual abortion toll is up to these days) is a crime of such epic proportions that only a fool could believe our nation will escape retribution for it without an equally epic repentance, and our survival depends on getting this word out. So, after pre-born children are safe again, then let’s open up our resources for these secondary priorities.

One of the reasons I’m studying Buddhims is the Buddhist belief in the equality of sentient beings in the sense that all sentient beings can reach enlightenment. Suffering is bad, all sentient beings suffer. Therefore, I applaud any organization that seeks to reduce suffering. The idea that all human suffering should be eliminated before we take care of non-humans makes no sense to me.

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, and that he said once, among other things, that each one of us is worth more than many sparrows. It is reasonable to infer from this that he thinks it is more more important to alleviate human suffering than it is to alleviate non-human suffering. If you believe he is God, and that you are not, and you have reasoned that he thinks a certain way, then it is reasonable, if not imperative, to conform your thinking to his.

[But you can blame every Christian, and especially—since they ought to know better—every Catholic (and there are *many) who will give and do more this year for “animal rights” than they will give and do for the many pro-life apostolates that are asking for their support and whose work is frankly more important.}

Excuse me, but I refuse to take “blame” for anything that I didn’t do, or for something that I neglected to do after somebody with a judgmental penchant decided I should have done. I definitely offer more support to animal-care-based organizations than to pro-life causes. I have good, valid, loving personal reasons for doing so. We can judge each other forever because we don’t support each other’s favorite causes. But I think we’re negating a lot of Christianity when we do so. There’s nothing in the Caholic catechism that says we have to support one cause more than another. We each have only so much in the way of resources. How dare you tell me where I should put mine to use.

I have to defer as well: I don’t think showing gruesome aborted fetus pictures really gets the point across. To me, they’re just disgusting (I’d say something comparing aborted baby pictures with splatter-horror movies, but that’s a whole other rant). I’m all for animal rights as much as I am for human rights: I believe all life, not just human life and not just animal life, is sacred and all living creatures needed to be treated with respect contingent upon what the creature is. Animals were given to us to be our servants and companions and need to be treated with care, even livestock on a farm. We are called to be wise and prudent stewards toward them.

Babies vs. animals just seems like a colossal case of “apples and oranges”.

Just what I was thinking. You don’t like people doing good works because it isn’t for the cause you support?

I like your post and agree with it except i dont think animals are given to us to be our servants exactly…yes we do use them as though as they are but the fact is whatever the Christian view on non-human animals, each species exists for its own sake.
Love your signature by the way.

Good for you! I wonder if those who whine and rant against animal rights actually get up and physically do anything to help abused people/children/girls and women in unfortunate situations.
