My fiancee and I have a wonderful baby girl of five months. She is Christian and I’m a Catholic. We plan to marry very soon. She understands that I must raise my child Catholic and I’d like to get Aly baptised. My question is, would the Church baptise my child given that she was born out of wedlock? Thanks in advance.

This will certainly be taken into account. By the way, you are also a Christian - Catholics are, in fact, the original Christians - the Catholic Church is the one that Christ founded; I am assuming you meant that your fiancée is a Protestant?

Congratulations to you on all fronts – and to your wife-to-be.

But one little thing makes me wince. Referring to your fiancee as “Christian” and yourself as “Catholic” makes it sound as if Catholics are not Christians. Historically, the original Christians were ALL Catholic. It makes better sense to say, “I am a Christian but my fiancee is Protestant.” I wouldn’t advise you to do that because nobody would understand.

How about saying “I am Catholic but my wife is Protestant”?

My thanks Mercy. On a side note, I had said Christian because in talking with a lot of Protestants, they don’t really like the term protestant and prefer to be called “Christians” really weird.

Probably because it makes it seem as though they are the originals, and that history never happened.

But if the term “Protestant” really upsets them that much, then perhaps you could refer to them as “non-Catholic Christians,” or just “non-Catholics.”

This detail is not insignificant. And the historical verdict is that all those sects that popped up after the Reformation still owe their existence to the Reformation principle of *sola Scriptura. *So they ARE Protestant, even if they reject the idea.

Yes. However, if you are truly committed to living and teaching the Catholic faith, are you repentant of the fact that you had a daughter out of wedlock? No one is going to judge you because you did, or throw you out of a church or anything, but unless you are and have confessed it, you cannot receive Holy Communion. Just want to make sure that got out there…

Yes that is true. When people ask what religion I am I state Christian. If they ask what type I say Catholic. The Catholic and the Orthodox are the original Christians and the Protestants are kind of the copy cats.

I’m not trying to nitpick, but only one can be an original. This is based on the definition of the word.

-arising or proceeding independently of anything else
(the Catholic Church proceeded the Orthodox Church)

-a primary (first) form or type from which varieties are derived.
(all other Christian sects are derived from the Catholic Church)

The Catholic Church is the Church founded by Christ. Therefore it is the original.
