Husband and I are expecting a baby boy in July. We can’t decide between the names Felix and Matthias, both great saints. It took FOREVER to come to those conclusions. What does everyone think?? I am interested in seeing which name gets the best reception.

I like the name Matthias, although at least in the US, he might spend his whole life correcting people’s pronunciation.

Congrats on your son!

Make sure to pray about it! It is a very important decision. Congratulations on your baby!

Both are nice, but how about Joseph? That is a great Biblical name.

Congratulations! Both are lovely names, although I think I prefer Matthias. If you wanted to, you could use both names, with one as a middle name.

Joe, we thought of Joseph but it is extremely popular 🙂 we wanted something a little different.

Matthias.

There is nothing “wrong” with the name Felix, but I always think of how a name will play when the child (especially if the child is a boy) is in school — what I call a “playground-proof” name. Felix is somewhat of an unusual name (in our society) and you also have the prissy Felix Unger character from The Odd Couple. (Granted, most children would never even have heard of this show.) Matthias shortens very efficiently to Matt, and the worst thing you can do with that name is morph it into “door mat”.

Boys have a hard enough time in our culture as it is. And yes, I have experience with this sort of thing — I had the task of naming a son, and I gave him a name that is strong, biblical, and undeniably masculine. It fits him well.

I’d go with Matthias. Matt is a good shortened name and Felix just sounds too happy-go-lucky.

Matthias sounds wonderfull, had a dog named Felix (also a famous cat cartoon) so I would be less inclined to go with that one…

I would go with Felix, but ultimately it’s your decision!

Matthias would be my choice, and not shortened to Matt. We don’t shorten names in our family, because we like the names we chose as they are.

If you truly cannot decide, then flip a coin. If the thought of a coin flip makes you cringe, then you should be able to decide based on the merits (merits being defined by you as a couple).

Or you could ask random strangers - that works as well as a coin flip as far as I can tell… 😁😁😁

I understand. And please know I was just funning with you.
How about combining the games.
Felix Matthias or Matthias Felix?
Just a thought.

Congratulations!

My personal option is Matthias. Reasons to follow:

We named our daughter Samantha. And we found it was handy being able to shorten it when required. So…

Sam? No response.
Sammy! No response.
Samantha!! That always got her attention.

So…

Matt?
Matty!
Matthias!!

Congratulations on your baby’s impending arrival. I would name him Mathias.

Matthias can go by Matt as a nickname if he decides he hates it. Felix just sounds a little too different and little kids would have difficulty saying it. If you have a Portuguese or Hispanic background, it’s a little more heard of. I’m hearing a lot of very old testament sounding names on some kids these days, and it’s a refreshing change from Apple, Justice, princess, etcetera, but the names also have their own challenges…

You might not short names, but what kids go by to their friends could be completely different. I do not ever use my full name, I use my nickname because I dislike it and don’t feel it really fits me. Sometimes friends come up with nicknames as well.
