I’m helping run my sister’s baby shower. I need to think of some sort of party favor. Most of the attendees are non-practicing, pro-choice Catholics (oxymoron, isn’t it?). Does anyone have a favor gift that has a subtle prolife, religious slant to it? I’m not trying to make a statement, but I want to favor to show how babies are gifts from God. Any ideas?

Hi,

Personally I would not use your sisters baby shower to put a religious slant on things to stick it to the pro-choice, non practicing Catholics. Your sister just being pregnant shows how precious life is. And if you still choose to go this way, be prepared to receive the wrath of people, and possibly including your sister. I can see no good coming out of this.

I am not trying to make a statement or ruffle any feathers. I just would prefer a token with a bible verse or something…not just a box of blue/pink mints.

Baby shower favors?

Is this a new trend? Why give guests favors? Not understanding, sorry.

What I did was buy M & M’s with the ultrasound of the new baby printed on them and put them in a cute cardboard diaper. It was a bit expensive but it went over fine.

How does your sister feel about this?

I really don’t think a baby shower is the appropriate time or place to do something like this. They are coming to celebrate the baby; that’s really enough. A pregnant woman has enough to worry about- adding stress by irritating her shower guests is not going to help. Unless she would really want you to do this, I wouldn’t do it.

I’ve only been to one shower where guests received a favor.

I think they’re traditional at birthdays and weddings, but I’ve never missed one at a birthday party either.

I think the shower itself will do a lot to show how precious life is.

I’ve never seen favors at a baby shower, bridal shower, or birthday. Kids birthdays often have toys for all the attendees, but that usually is until around age 6-7. I’ve never seen a birthday party for an older child or adult with favors.

Wedding favors are a regional tradition. But the baby shower thing is new to me, and I’ve been to oodles of showers.

In our family, we give favors for every party, and have been to baby showers for friends who also gave baby shower gifts too. It must be a custom depending on where you live.

One time, we got little nailpolishes with a small rattle charm wrapped in pink and blue tulle. The nailpolishes had names like-precious gift, innocence and so on…essie nailpolish has a lot of names like this.

It must be regional.

I’m Italian American, In Italy they traditionally gave out “bomboniere” with “Confetti” for all occasions. Confetti were either Jordan almonds, or similarly shaped hard candies filled with chocolate.

Normally they would be tulle filled sacks of these confetti, and the color of the confetti would vary for the occasion. White for weddings, green for engagements, red for graduations, pink for baby girl baptisms, blue for baby boy baptisms.

Most Italian Americans will give out favors for parties of all types. Sometimes they can be quite elaborate.

I actually remember one of my husband’s friends at my wedding thinking it was great to receive a “gift” from us in form of a favor/

For the OP, for my son’s First Communion, I had gotten chocolate bars with customized wrappers. The wrapper had his name, the date of his First Communion and an image of a chalice and I believe a cross.

Yes, MaryGail, I am italian American too–

The candy bar with the custom wrapper is the best idea. One easily done on your home printer. You can use the baby’s name (if they have selected one in advance) or “Thank you for celebrating with us!” and use a little lamb clip art.

It must be regional. I’ve never been to any shower (wedding, baby) and NOT received a favor.

I did shower favors for mine… I had little heart-shaped tins, tied little bows on them, and filled them with little pastel blue M&Ms. The general idea was, “They’re going through the effort of throwing a party, and are being generous with their gifts… a little token of appreciation would be thoughtful.” But I’m Italian-American, too… so perhaps it’s just sort of ingrained. 🙂

A votive candle birth prayer seems like a possible idea…

You could get a small knitted item like sock, pacifier, purse, and etch eithor Psalm 139:13 or Jeremiah 1:3.

I guess you could make the theme: Knitting … Get a book cover that’s knitted for baby shower book … Have a game where you knit … And bring out many knitted items for decoration.

However, it sounds like you are preaching to the choir.

My daughter-in-law had a baby shower in February. She had small little “pots” made from egg carton like material and potting soil and flower seeds of bright pink flowers (she was having a girl) and everyone got little sample size bottles of shower gel and body lotion from Bath & Body Works.
Like others have said- women are coming to welcome a new baby so that is pro-life. You could make some kind of banner or something that says “choose life” or “celebrate life” if your sister approves.

I don’t think this is an appropriate time to make political statements. It is a happy time, where family and friends gather to “shower” mom with gifts for the new baby. People who are pro choice aren’t baby haters, especially if they are going to a baby shower. Now, if someone stands up and yells, “you should have aborted that thing!” It would be appropriate to punch said person in the nose and throw them out. Doubt that will happen.

I’ve seen nail polish given out pink/blue I have also seen where people just tied pink/blue ribbon around different types of polish because well, pink is only for summer and blue nails look like you have lost circulation.😛

I have also seen cheap baby bottles filled with candy. Popcorn balls with “about to pop” written on it. Loofas with a thing saying “from our shower to yours.”

If it is themed, you could give a favor that goes with the theme.
