Baby shower favors

Every bridal or baby shower I’ve been to had favors, and I’ve been to showers in the Northeast, Southeast, and the West Coast.

Anyway, as to the original point…unless this is something you sister wants, I would avoid the overtly religious messages. I don’t think it’s the appropriate time. A baptism is, but a baby shower is a purely secular invention and it might seem out of place at best.

For my friend’s recent baby shower we had little bags of popcorn tied with a pink ribbon. For my baby shower there were votive candles and then when my 2nd child was born a group of my girlfriends just took me out for a tea party and everyone got a box of tea.

Oh, assorted flavors of tea bags sounds nice! Many of us would like to try some of more interesting sounding ones, but don’t want to pay 5.99 for a whole box in case we don’t like them! Especially if they are serving tea at the shower. 👍

Most of the attendees are non-practicing, pro-choice Catholics (oxymoron, isn’t it?). Does anyone have a favor gift that has a subtle prolife, religious slant to it? I’m not trying to make a statement, but I want to favor to show how babies are gifts from God.
I am not sure why you say that you are “not trying to make a statement.” You clearly are if you are pointing out the attendees lack of faith to us, and asking for ideas for favors with a prolife, religious slant to them.

I doubt that anyone needs a favor to realize that babies are a gift from God. So what is your goal in trying to point this out to them?

It’s a baby shower for your sister, not a pro-life shower for a church group.

Have some snacks, play some silly games, shower her with gifts and goodness, not some kind of “message” to her guests.

Aren’t we called to always evangelize? Isn’t a baby shower a perfect place to mention God? I said the guests are lacking faith because there will not be a prayer before meal or any other reference to God. My mother, who is paying for the shower, wants a favor (this is common where I’m from). She asked me to take care of it. I just thought a favor that had a bible verse about babies would be appropriate. It’s not like I’m suggesting photos of aborted babies or a poster that reads “Did you go to mass last week?”

I am not getting a favor in order to send a message. There will be a favor regardless- I just thought a bible verse or something like the candle and prayer for mom would be nice.

We’re always called to evangelize, but it’s pointless to do it when it won’t be received well, and this is a situation where it won’t be received well. It might actually hinder them from returning to the faith because they might see it as preachy or inappropriate.

Your heart is in the right place, absolutely, but I don’t think this will achieve what you want it to.

I have been to showers (baby & bridal) all of the US and Military bases around the world and there have always been favors. I just did my nieces last year and they got a boo Boo bunny and a bottle filled with M&Ms.

I even do party bags for Holidays, & Birthday Parties, Hubby’s Party is Saturday and I just finished making his gift bags. People love it and for an extra $25.00 per 15 people it is lots of fun making them up and coming up with new ideas every year. Plus it is really for me, I love seeing peoples reactions when they open them.

It doesn’t sound like you’re trying to do this “for mom”- you said you want a favor “to show how babies are gifts from God” to the non-practicing Catholics in attendance. Again I ask, how does your sister feel about this? If there is any doubt that she’d be anything less than thrilled, choose a cute favor and let her enjoy HER day.

Yep! It is HER day. What SHE wants. 👍

For goodness sake! I’m not thinking of passing out sections of the Catechism! I was simply asking for ideas on a party favor (that is for guests, not mom) that has some sort of biblical verse. This is my family. They aren’t going to look at a candle or other favor that has a prayer and say, “Stop shoving your religion down my throat!” They are ALL Catholic, just not practicing.

Thank you to those who offered suggestions on favors. My mom and I are looking at buying the candle that has a note asking to pray for mom and baby.

God bless!

I don’t think putting a Bible verse that refers to the blessing that children are would be a problem for people there. It’s not shoving anything, it’s a declaration of what the mom to be feels.

I see people use Bible verses on all sorts of things, and it’s no different than people putting quotes from lyrics, poetry etc on something. It’s heartfelt and meaningful to them and it’s appropriate to express themselves in that manner.

It’s even less of an issue if the people are Catholics, no matter their individual feelings or beliefs, I doubt they would pale and faint to see a fellow Catholic express such a feeling.

I’m not “in the know” these days about what are popular shower favors, but I say go ahead and include a verse, and have a lovely shower and best to your sister and her growing family.

Personally, I love the idea of a personalized wrapper on a chocolate bar, because…chocolate!

The way you presented this idea led a lot of us to believe that you were using your sister’s baby shower as a venue to evangelize. All I’m trying to say is that it’s your sister’s day, and everything that you plan, even the favors, should be something that she would like and enjoy. If she would like a “subtle prolife, religious slant” to show her non-practicing guests that “babies are a gift from God”, great! If you truly think she would love a candle with a prayer attached, that’s lovely. But if you think she and the guests would enjoy some cute nail polish or candy or tea or whatever more, go with what you think SHE would like, rather than trying to “subtly” send messages to the guests.
