In his first epistle, Peter tells his readers that he is writing from “Babylon” (1 Pet. 5:13), which was a first-century code word for the city of pagan Rome. Further, the Fathers are unanimous in declaring that he went to Rome and was martyred there under the pagan emperor Nero.

True, but the Fathers were not unanimous about the identity of “Babylon the Great” in the Book of Revelation. And of course none of them suggested she was the Catholic Church, because they trusted the Word of God: “the Gates of Hell will not prevail.” Anyhow, the “Mother of Harlots” is not Rome.

Peter was never in the ACTUAL Babylon. He was, however, imprisoned in Rome when he wrote the letter…

Yes it was. The hanging gardens of Babylon…Saddam Hussein wanted to restore them.

May I suggest a comprehesive study of Daniel and Revelation, along with historical books, Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, The Two Empires, also so other books concerning Church History by various authors, both Catholic and Non-Catholic. In researching this subject you are going to find it long and sometimes tiresome, but don’t give up. It’s quite interesting.

There were a lot of code words which Christians used, and this so they could practice their religion safely, exchange letters, and so the gentiles wouldn’t learn about the mysteries, because they knew that, if the gentles ever learned about the mysteries of their faith, they (the mysteries) would be ridiculed and mocked by those who do not understand them. The Christians certainly did preach about Jesus, but of the msteries, only the catechized were allowed to learn about them. Because of this, in the ancient world Christianity was kind of looked at as a secretive religion.

The Book of Revelations uses many symbols which were familiar to Christians, especially Christians who converted from Judaism (many Christian symbols were actually borrowed from Judaism). I can list a few of the symbols used by Christians, but not all of them, since symbolism isn’t my area of expertise.

Fish - Jesus
Babylon - Rome
Woman - God’s People, the Virgin Mary
666 - Emperor Nero
Bread - Manna, Jesus
Vineyard - Israel
Jerusalem - Paradise

Babylon (the real one) had mostly fallen apart by the time of the Apostles, so there isn’t much reason to think that they would be there. It’s definitely a codeword, and probably Rome.

I’m not sure what the point is here.

Is the OP suggesting that the catholic church is Babylon? Common sense seems to suggest that St. Peter is calling the Roman Empire, centered on Rome Babylon.

If the OP is suggesting that the bible thus claims the catholic church to be the ‘whore of babylon’ then I suggest he had better get his scissors out. Why? Well, St. Peter was writing FROM Rome as the leader of the Church there, correct? Well if the Church in Rome is the whore of Babylon then you’d better get busy cutting out of your Bible everything written by the LEADER of the church in Rome, hadn’t you?
