Hello,
Could anyone please tell me if a catholic can use Bach remedies?
I’ve spent thousands of euros on driving lessons (about 100 hours of driving) and I have a test tomorrow. It is not an exam but a test in order to determinate if I am allowed to drive due to a medical impairment. I am very nervous and therefore my driving instructor, insisted that I would buy Bach "rescue’.
I just bought it but I wonder if catholics should use this? Is this new age? Demonic?
Thanks.

Bach flower remedies contain a 50:50 solution of water and brandy plus a very small (homeopathic) amount of flower material. So yeah, I think it’s useless except as a placebo. (And there’s brandy, of course.)

Homeopathic medicine is contrary to truth, which is generally contrary to being a follower of Christ the Truth, and the idea of “water memory” is basically occult nonsense. But I don’t think there have been any formal rulings against it by the Church. If people want to waste their time and money, the Church isn’t always going to be there to hold people’s hands (unless the problem gets really bad and obvious).

Plain old chamomile tea is usually considered calming. (Try some ahead of time and make sure you’re not allergic, and that it doesn’t put you to sleep.)

Of course, the common off-label use of beta blockers to fight stage fright is a possibility. A lot of doctors will proscribe extremely low doses of propranolol for this use. I would say that a driving test is a similar situation to performing on stage!

So talk to your doctor about that, if your anxiety is that bad. He/she might even be able to give you a free sample pack, since it would just be a single use.

Hope this helped!

If you aren’t used to alcohol, that might not be a good idea before a driving test! 😉

Placebos have their place, just get a cheap one. Chewing gum, a hard candy to suck on - things like that can help distract from the anxiety a bit.

I don’t understand how people can believe that water memory thing - so silly! :whacky:

Well, I’m a new Catholic but I’ve used it. My doctor has used it on me when I’ve been in the midst of having an anxiety attack. Maybe it’s a placebo, but it works for me, and my doctor keeps it in her office to use on patients. Not sure why an herbal remedy would be considered “occult”. And you only place a few drops under your tongue, or squirt some in water and drink it. You will not absorb anywhere near enough alcohol to have any impact on driving, you’re literally only using a few drops.

Well, these days, when a homeopathic remedy has a “very small” amount of herbal ingredient, it means “once upon a time it touched some water, and then we diluted that water with gallons and gallons more water.”

“Water memory” is from “the doctrine of contagion,” which was the ancient idea that anything that had ever touched anything else would always be connected with it afterward. It was often used for spells (which people thought were also scientific) because it taught that doing something to one thing would do something to the other thing it had previously touched, even if they were separated and would never actually touch ever again. It used to be a “natural philosophy” idea, back in the days of the Greeks and Romans, and it stuck around in medicine for a long time because people didn’t know better. But now it’s only believed by Wiccans and homeopathy. Continuing to believe in it is believing in magic.

Popularity doesn’t make a thing true. “The doctrine of humors” is still a big part of Indian “Vedic medicine” and Muslim “Greek medicine,” even though medical science in the West stopped blaming depression (“melancholy”) on black bile hundreds of years ago. There are some things that they’re good at (wellness treatments, in many cases) but it’s not the type of medicine I’d want to trust my life to. Medieval-style humors medicine is a pinch of good stuff and a bushel of scary bad stuff.

In the olden days, US homeopaths actually did treat people with herbal remedies (and they were often effective and knowledgeable doctors), but now it’s usually all water, all over the world. Having brandy in the water seems like a superior way to go. 🙂

Of course, if you’re not driving and you really want an herbal alcoholic remedy, you should go with Chartreuse (the Carthusian monks’ secret blend of herbs and spices!), Jaegermeister (yup, it tastes yucky because it’s full of herbal forest goodness - it was originally sold as medicine for hunters), or pretty much any liqueur or liquor that was originally designed to be a “digestive.”

Thanks a lot for the information. I asked my priest for advice as well and he also think I should not use it. I am familiair with the remedies of St. Hildegard of Bingen. Those are just herbal teas and things like that and I decided to be faithful to this, because I know that this really works. Also, I prayed to the Holy Spirit, for his courage, joy and peace and I am sure that He is going to help me during the test. If I fail, I accept that this is Divine providence. Thanks again.

Same here.

Good for you, I pray that you will pass the driving test with
flying colors, praising God, who gives us the privilege to
drive a heavy-weighted vehicle!!!

Our Father, who is in heaven,
Your name be held holy,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses as
we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Just a bit of the sap of papaver somniferum has done wonders thru the ages of relieving anxieties, rheumatism, gout pain, and a host of other ills!😉
