Last Sunday I attended a 5:30 PM teen Mass where they played back ground music (instrumental) during the Gospel reading. It kind of bothered me. Is this appropriate?

Why should music be needed when the Word is being spoken. I don’t think it is appropiate.

It’s not proper but not surprising. In many churches, the “teen mass” is an oxymoron.

Christ is present to us in the Gospel. With that said, the Gospel should be the focus point of the Liturgy of the Word, and there should be distractions such as background music in my opinion.
