Background on Ravi Zacharias

Hi,

In a conversation with a shuttle driver, at a car delearship, that I have come to know the name of this Evangelical Minister Ravi Zacharias arouse who runs his own ministry www.rzim.org in the context of a conversation we were having. He seems to be a Billy Graham style Evangelist with some interesting writings. I have yet to start research him and I would welcome any background information on his theology, since my time to do this is rather limited but I will do so. Just trying to save some time. Zacharias’ minsitry will likely be the topic of conversation next time I meet this aquaintance.

Evangelical to be sure, but an excellent apologist for Christianity. One of the most engaging speakers I’ve been privileged to hear.
 
I listen to him on the radio occasionally. He’s one of the few protestant preachers I like - he’s intelligent & logical!

Yes. I have to admit that I like him too. As far as I can tell, he doesn’t seem to be anti-Catholic. To be sure, there are some points about Catholicism that he probably disagrees with strongly-- but he certainly hasn’t built his ministry on bashing the Catholic faith at all as far as I can tell.

His background in India, I think, has gifted him with a very reasonable approach toward non-Christians. I think he understands what it was like to not be sure of the truth-- and his experience with this has never been forgotten when he speaks with non-Christians.
 
He appears to be a very intelligent and reasonable fellow with a gift for incisiveness. Not Catholic, as you say, and would probably gainsay many specifically Catholic doctrines, but there’s a difference between principled disagreements with Catholic ideas and anti-Catholic bigotry.

I seem to remember that a few of the writers on his website are affiliated with the Dutch and other Reformed churches – sharp-minded and intellectually consequential denominations, but often a bit 16th-century in their stance toward Catholicism. I could be wrong about those writers, though, and even if I’m not, that’s not necessarily a reflection on R.Z.
 
Say, wasn’t he that guy that used to play sitar with George Harrison? :rolleyes:
 
I believe he is Reformed (and definately anything BUT a Billy Graham!). He technically a “speaker and writer”.

Have you heard him say anything that is anti-Catholic? I have actually listened to his program “Let My People Think” on the radio, and I have never heard anything that was anti-Catholic. Please inform me, if I am missing something. By the way, Billy Graham is a wonderful man. One of my Catholic friends from my Catholic parish Bible study was a volunteer on a Billy Graham crusade. He never said anything anti-Catholic. If somebody made a decision for Christ or decided to recommit his or her life to Christ at the crusade and chose the Catholic faith, Billy Graham made sure that there were prayer partners from the Catholic Church to pray with and talk to those people and to give them information about how to join or get back into the Catholic Church.

Me too! His daughter, Anne Graham Lotz, is great too. Although, she only does women’s programs because the Southern Baptist Church is similar to the Catholic Church in that women cannot preach and teach to men (no women priests or ministers), so you probably aren’t familiar with her. My Catholic parish actually had fliers advertising Anne Graham Lotz’s women’s crusade. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend due to my work schedule at the time, but a friend of mine from church went and said that she was just as great as her father.
 
No, I’ve never heard Ravi say anything anti-Catholic. I have several issues with Graham…but all of those are beside the point. There is no comparison between Billy and Ravi…apples and oranges.
 
Ravi is an excellent speaker and is not anti-Catholic in any way. I have had the pleasure of some business dealings with his organization and I have spoken with him. He knows I am Catholic and has never tried to “convert” me.

Honestly, I’d think that he might be closer to Catholic than a Reformer.

Alot of us Reformed are closer to Catholic than you would suspect.
 
Dr. Ravi Zacharias is a brilliant Christian scholar based in Atlanta, USA. He is from Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. But he has genuine appreciation for the Catholic Church. He is a very good friend of many Catholic Apologists. He is one of the most respected Christian leaders worldwide. When it comes to moral issues he has many things in common with Catholic Church. He is a fine person to associate with.
