Hello, so I want to attend Mass as it is All saints day tomorrow. However I can’t go At night. As a result, I’m going to miss some school and go right after. Can I bring a backpack to Mass? I’m concerned that it might be shady.

So long as it’s not making a ticking sound and wires aren’t poking out of it, you should be fine. 😛

As a teacher, I’d like to remind you of the importance of attending classes. 🤓

While it’s awesome you want to attend mass – and yes, I know it is a holy day of obligation in most places – you are released from your obligation if you cannot attend mass because of responsibilities such as attending class.

OK, well, dance class probably would not qualify. But high school or college courses certainly would.

I also noticed that you are in RCIA, which means you aren’t even obligated to go to mass tomorrow.

That’s just my two cents’ worth of opinion on missing classes, which you didn’t ask about. Sorry, it’s the teacher in me I guess.

Regarding the backpack, no, it’s not a problem at all. Just try to keep it out of the way of others near you.

Oh. I know I’m not obligated but when I am obligated I am still gonna be busy if not busier so might as well prepare for obligation. And it’s just welding and part of sex-ed so I’m not missing much

It depends. If you have leftover Halloween candy in the pack, proper etiquette demands you must share.

I almost always bring a backpack to Mass. I try to be discrete and put it next the wall of the church. I will place the smaller one on the pew itself if it isn’t crowded. A lot of women bring in big shopping bags and huge purses so I don’t see why it should be a problem.

I almost always ride my bike to Mass so that is why I have the backpack.

Im coming to Mass tomorrow from work and don’t want to leave my laptop in the car so I will bring a backpack in. I place it at my feet under the pew.

If we can’t, no one has told me! I always bring a backpack to Mass. I have three children, and it serves as my diaper bag. I just slide it under the pew when I don’t need it.

I’ll be bringing my backpack. Depending on how many people are there it’ll either occupy the seat next to me or get slid under a chair.

If you’re talking about daily Mass where the people know you and know it’s your backpack that fine, but from a security standpoint I would be very anxious to see an unattended backpack in a corner of my church at Sunday Mass.

Sad to say, that is a concern these days. But, if the OP keeps it with him, and doesn’t “leave it unattended in a corner”, it shouldn’t raise too much concern, hopefully.

Such things are forbidden according to the Bible (also no purses ladies!):

Luke 10:4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals;

😉

Sorry I should have been clearer: I sit on the pew next to the wall where I put the backpack or I am otherwise very close to it. In my urban church I wouldn’t leave my backpack alone by itself.

No worries! We’ve been discussing security at our church and one of the tasks we would like the ushers to do before Mass is to walk through the church, including bathrooms, etc., to look for unattended items. Sad that we should have to do it, but better safe than sorry.

The same could be said about an unattended purse or shopping bag, though. I don’t think a backpack in particular would stand out to me in this way.

Agreed. It’s the fact that it is unattended rather than what it is that raises concern (other than during Communion, of course!).
