My experience has been that atheists will at some point demonstrate exactly how much they despise your faith, even if they seem very respectful and calm on the surface. Just give them time and allow the façade of niceness to drop a little.

Id stay away from those kinda blogs…it isnt likely that they will suddenly become catholic by arguing with you…just pray for athiests worldwide to convert
I hear similar things from Atheists “what’s the point in debating (enter religion here) they are so indoctrinated nothing will ever change”

I could not disagree more I speak to people all the time that have gone both ways everyone is on a journey to their version of the truth and picking up your ball and going home gets no one anywhere.

OP: I am sorry to hear of your bad experience and I am glad many on here have said their are kind atheists out there 👍

Don’t get into internet debates. If I had to think of the worst possible way to waste time, it would be by having an online debate over the existence of god. If a debate like that is what you’re looking for, find a close friend who’s into philosophy and have a lively discussion over coffee.

And online, everyone is more brave and far more polarized. I’m not surprised that the atheist site upset you, as I am often disturbed by things I see on this site. Just remember that that blog is not representative of all atheists, especially ones that you encounter in real life, just as the people on CAF are nothing like any of the super devout catholics that I know IRL.

I’d like to think I am 🙂 I’m Agnostic actually, but I don’t think that makes a difference.

I have also met many angry religious folks on the internet forums as well. I just read a disgusting post by a supposed Christian on The Blaze today suggesting we all (leftist Atheists) are put to death. Just so you know anyone can be a jerk especially when they are emotionally invested in the topic. Doors almost always swing both ways.

I guess my title shouldn’t surprise many people here. Decided against my better judgment (the voice in the back of my head) to engage someone on their atheist blog. It amazes me that no matter how polite someone may try to be, if you DARE ask an honest question or share that you have a different opinion (in the most non-confrontational way possible!) prepare to have your head bitten off! Sometimes I wonder why I even bother being polite at all!..

As you might tell, I’m fresh from this particular blog website and it gets me thinking, have ANY of you ever encountered an atheist with which you can have a polite discussion/debate? I sure haven’t found any yet. I’m really asking–anybody??

Sorry for the rant, but I’m exasperated! There must be cool-headed atheists out there somewhere!
Yes, I usually start with do you really want an answer or are you out to rattle my cage?

When they start to get mad, I point them back to their answer to that question.

Internet atheists are generally a special breed of misanthrope.

Debating them is roughly analogous to arguing with a brick wall; you leave exasperated and the wall never even noticed you were there.
Sounds like one or two of my encounters with internet Catholics.

I can say I never had a polite discusion on the internet with an Atheist. I have, however, had many such conversations in person.

They are much bolder when they aren’t looking you in the eye

I have had plenty of experience of discussing with atheists and can correlate your experience.

The problem with atheists is that while they pretend to be the epitome of reason, logic and intelligence the fact that they reject common sense, science and their own conscience underlies their constant struggle to justify their fairy tale beliefs and as such are on a mission to promote their house of cards and certainly will never be entertained with learning. Paz.

First a SINCERE welcome to CAF:)

2nd a bit of grandfatherly advice: :if you don’t seek trouble your far less likely to encounter it."

We are ALL called to some manner of evangelization; BUT there are tons on non-Catholic Christians;& fallen away catholics who are ALSO in need of true Faith information, and may be more fertile soil:D

Allow the Holy Spirit to provide the opportunities and don’t look for trouble:thumbsup:

God bless you friend!

I think the greater the theological or spiritual distance from any two people the closer physically the relationship needs to be to make headway.

Real face to face friendships need to be struck with the most distant ones, I am afraid.

The Internet has its uses for other forms of apostolate.

If each of us added 3 new friends a year…coffee, a beer, lunch, a game, fixing a car together…over 10 years God’s kingdom would be larger and far more lively and generous.

Take conversation from superficial topics to the substantial topics, and very gradually the supernatural topics.

See this article.

Or…maybe…they’re different people!
