Bad thoughts during the consecration at Mass?

I went to Mass today for ash wednesday and with the intention of starting off a good lent. Duing the consecration at Mass when the priest raised the Host and Chalice I had a thought like I should laugh or thinking is this a joke or something…it immediately upset me and I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I’m worried did I really think it? I know Jesus is present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity so I hate that I thought that! Did I upset God?
Such a terrible start to lent too

I relate. It’s amazing how good Satan is at distracting us right when we want most to be focused.

Fear not, you didn’t consent to this thought, it was merely a distraction and a temptation. It probably wasn’t even a sin. Sadly one of our sufferings in this world is that distractions and temptations will never go away!

It’s not a terrible start to Lent. Keep fending off the distractions and it’ll be a great Lent.

Such thoughts can happen to some especially when they do not want them…at rather holy times.

UNWANTED THOUGHTS

All sorts of thoughts can happen to us out of the blue…(not sought etc)

The fact that a Blasphemous thought happened to one- does not mean per se there was any sin.

And for mortal sin one needs not only grave matter, full knowledge and deliberate (complete) consent…

Just cause a thought happened to you does not mean there was any sin. Let alone mortal sin.

Just calmly turn to something good…

Even if the thoughts return and return…or are intensely happening that does not mean there was any sin per se.

The fact that one is does not want them that they are go against what you want can rather be a sign one is well does not want them (does not consent fully). Talk with your Priest in confession about this …get some personal guidance.

Now back to unwanted thoughts…

The more you fear and try hard not to have them…the more they will likely come and bother you.

The best thing to do with such thoughts is not to fight them directly --not fear that they will come—simply do not consent and simply and calmly turn to something else…(or it may be best to keep doing the good thing one is doing…like they come out of the blue when your at work …keep working…keep praying …etc…calmly ignoring them…turning to something good…)

Ignore such unwanted thoughts like one would ignore a hissing goose or a barking dog. One does not stop to argue with a hissing goose or a barking dog does one? No. One keeps on walking…

Ignore such unwanted thoughts and do not fear them…just calmly turn to something good.

I have some need or compulsion to remember things - but they are not essential. Lists have always been important to me. I was trying to remember the names of the 7 Dwarfs from Snow White. Then I will think about who were the 6 wives of Henry VIII. Or I will try to list other things. If it happens to be at Mass, I just try not to think about it, but such thoughts keep coming back. These are thoughts at church, and they keep bugging me. Of course I will have more thoughts about what to get at the store, etc.

I guess we all have these things.

Foul thoughts happen, Therese. We all have them. The saints have them. It’s how you act upon them that matters, and you acted like a disciple of Christ in the face of it, turning immediately to your FAITH. Surely there is no sin in that. God allows us to be tempted for good reason, and now this has only made you wiser and stronger for the battle. What a wonderful start to Lent.
That’s God’s grace. Praise God, disciple.

Would not say that bad thoughts constitute mortal sin per se, but more viewed as stones cast(bolic) through(dia) consciousness, where one well aimed stone can cause great disturbances especially in a weak or poorly established area of our faith. Exposing them in the light of the sacrament of confession starts clearing out even the lower bowels of our soul where sin takes a foothold. Usually a brief examen will bring to light the root of the issue. Considering what is being aimed at in you in this instance, would bring to confess like, forgive me, my faith is poor in full belief in the eucharist, please strengthen my faith Lord.

The sacraments work to compliment one another to greater benefit. A prayer I found useful when approaching the eucharist is ,“Lord, hold me in your grace, that I may fully receive you”.But also great aids to cherish more fully the good gift one recieved, are the Divine Praises and Anima Christi, internally sung or prayed to the presence of Christ newly entering you at each eucharist. I suppose I would describe it an cohesive, internal sacramental life, corresponding to the sacraments of the church. I less and less see confession about me being bad, but God being so infinitely good.

Sorry, gone on a bit, but hope it helps in some way. Full faith in the eucharist is no small goal, most of the disciples fell at this point, and a third of the body of Christ(protestants) can’t come to terms with this.
