Bad Wedding Reception Behavior

ROFL…and I’ll still snigger when the obnoxious drunk guy falls off the bar stool due to that open bar…

😃
That’s why I’d want an open bar… it’s not exactly entertaining to watch the Father & Bride’s dance, and I’ve never really enjoyed The Electric Slide. But, watching that one drunk uncle make a monkey of himself is always good fun.

OK may you all have seen something I have not. When hubby and I did this at our wedding we each had a small peice of cake in our hand and fed it to each other simulataneously. We kind of pushed it into the face of the other, some of it got on, up, and/or under our noses, and/or on our chin -most actually fell on the floor because we both had the natural reaction of stepping back.

I am not talking about nor have I ever seen at a wedding someone’s face get pushed into the cake, a whole plate of cake getting smashed into someone’s face or a peice of cake getting crammed all over someone’s face.

I first heard of the cake-smashing tradition at a birthday party in elementary school. I had never seen it before, when suddenly a child’s parents smashed her face into the cake, rendering it mostly inedible. We were all disappointed and shocked at her parents’ cruelty (that’s my 10-year-old self’s opinion).
That’s just absolutely horrible. 😦

An older, faithfully Catholic priest I met told me that most priests would much rather preside over a funeral than a wedding. Weddings, he said, involve a lot of guests and relatives with no respect for Catholicism, people who have been drinking heavily before the ceremony, and bad behavior such as vulgar and profane language in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle.
Ain’t that the truth? 😦

Last week, I was watching an episode of Bridezilla’s. I missed the first part of the show, but I tuned in at the part of the rehearsal in a Catholic church. Apparently the bride was at war with her fiance’s sisters. A huge, nasty argument broke out between all of them right in the middle of the church. It got loud and there was a lot of horrible cussing going on. My sil and I were just sitting there in shock with our mouths hanging open in shock. It was just so sad that these people, even the Catholic bride (I think she was the only Catholic of the group), just had NO RESPECT for where they were. The scene ended with the priest practically shoving the whole party, mid-fight, out the door and closing the doors on them. Then it turned physical outside on the steps. I am still horrified.

They cut the cake, placed it on a small plate, then the groom fed his bride a small piece of cake on a fork, then she fed him a chocolate-covered strawberry. It was very sweet. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next: They were actually BOOED by the guests!
That happened at our wedding – tho’ just cake and not strawberries. . . When booed by my uncle and some cousins, we each took a pinkie finger of icing and playfully dotted the tip of the others nose with it. Satisfied our guests and cleaned up easily. . . and the video is kind of cute. BTW we’ll celebrate 19 years of marriage this month.

Well, since the couple had already agreed quite firmly to NOT smear any cake on each other (they felt very strongly about this), bowing to the pressure of the crowd (by either party) would have been out of line. I had expected the crowd to go “Awwww!” and then applaud, so the booing floored me.

Which brings up another point: if the couple has already agreed to NOT smash, smear, dab or otherwise apply cake and/or frosting to each other’s faces, IT SHOULD NOT BE DONE. I’ve seen a few instances where the bride told the groom “Don’t you dare!” ahead of time and he went ahead and did it anyway(sometimes egged on by his buddies and/or his and the bride’s family!) Then he wondered why she got so upset (“Boy, she can’t take a joke.”) Because a breach of trust IS NOT FUNNY and it’s extremely childish to excuse yourself by saying “Oh, he/she is just overreacting. I was just playing.”

Sorry, that’s just one of my pet peeves, when you ask someone NOT to do something to embarrass you and then they do it anyway and EXPECT you to laugh!

How horrible!!! As a musician, I have been to many wedding ceremonies as a hired person - Catholic and non-Catholic. Where I frequently sing for weddings, the organist there has been playing there for nearly 30 years. In the 80s, especially, he has seen some pretty horrid events of people’s behaviour during the wedding mass or prior/after. One that came to my mind after reading this post was when a wedding ended rather late with another wedding group waiting to go in. One of the fathers or some other guy in the second wedding got upset that they were still having the receiving line. He got into a verbal altercation with the father of the first wedding, which led to throwing punches and a big brawl occurred in the vestibule.

Another was a wedding where the family actually hired someone to pass out hors d’oerves in the vestibule - thinking that they could get away with it.

Really… these people have no clue.

Here is the worst of them all. An organist we both know was there. He and another musician were hired to play at a couple’s wedding. Apparently the friend of the groom hated the bride. On the day of the wedding, this “friend” paid off the limousine driver to pick up the bride, a couple of the bridesmaids, mother and flowergirl and to NOT take them to the church. No one knew it at the time, but the organist said that he and the other musician just kept playing music, waiting, while family began to get worried, thinking they were in an accident, etc. This limo driver had automatically locked the doors so that the bride and other ladies could not get out, drove them up north into another state, drove back and then let them out. This was in the evening now. In the meantime, the guests were told to still go to the reception. It was absolutely horrible. The organist found out what actually happen from the priest who married the couple later. The limo driver and the “friend” were convicted for kidnapping because the flowergirl was a child and taken out of the state without permission, etc. It is the worst wedding nightmare I have ever heard of.

Wow, that just makes me sad. I’d hope the groom cut that “friend” out of his life after that.

I told DH from the beginning what would happen if he smeared cake in my face. I am, sadly, not the most girly of girls, and I have no problem swinging. I am sorry to say that if DH had smeared cake in my face at the reception, I would have punched him right in the nose.

But he didn’t neither did I, and everything was fine. I have yet to actually see anyone do this, except on Bridezilla, which seems to be the groom’s revenge on his new wife for her atrocious behavior.

BTW- one of my schoolmates was on Bridezilla. She was the one who refused to do the chair dance, told the guests she was going to be taking care of all the problems that occurred before the wedding, and was drunk on Vodka. Oh yes, and her new husband told her to shut-up during her speech. Yep. Went to school with her.

It has a lot to do with it and if you could get off your proverbial, self righteous perch for one second you might be able to see my point.
Well my my my - aren’t we being silly and petty now with the calling of names.

The desire for beauty in a wedding is not a bridezilla trait as much as you might like to assume this is the case. Many people equate beauty with holiness and the sacred. To want a “beautiful wedding” does not mean that beauty can’t be found in the most simple and humble of places - it doesn’t have to be a 3 million dollar wedding. Beauty can be anywhere. Besides - we are not talking about the ceremony in this discussion, that is completely off topic. We are talking about the conduct of the bride and groom at the reception, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Sacrament. So if you are trying to say that what truly matters is the marriage and not the event, then I have never disagreed with you. But if you think that just because someone wants a nice wedding that they are being short sighted and don’t understand the importance of the Sacrament then I think you are totally off the mark (in many cases).
the meaning of the ceremony is what’s more important than the ceremony itself.
I’m not familiar with anyone feeding each other cake during the wedding ceremony. That is why your comments are not relevant to this discussion, you keep talking about the importance of the ceremony. We are having a discussion about the reception. Not the Sacrament or the ceremony.

I don’t have a clue, but I suspect it had something to do with the 80’s, one sparkled glove and florescent clothing. Or maybe it was the late 60’s baby- and all that swingin’ jive! (Think Austin Powers Baby!) Who knows?

:rotfl:

Bet we would find something if we “googled” it! 👍
Been there done that and couldn’t find anything. 😃 All I found was that we have this “mysterious” tradition but no clue where or when. 😛

Did you know it’s bad luck if a guy passes by a nun or monk on his way to propose to his intended?

Well my my my- aren’t we being Christlike pretending to have done no wrong after scolding me a post earlier after I was only saying that it was just a little rash to be thinking that the act was abuse.:D:thumbsup::rolleyes:

You won’t understand my point,so I’ll respectfully drop it, and probably no girl I meet ever will, but the fact of the matter is that many people do emphasize the ceremony (which I believe the reception is part of) over the sacrament.

Then you have never met women like those who belong to my Catholic Bridal Forum. Not a single one there would ever consider that the party is even equal to, not to mention, more important than, the Sacrament.

I pray that one day you can meet a woman like they are - all men should be so lucky.

May God Bless you in finding the right woman.

Was she the one that was mad that her mil showed up late and delayed the wedding?

I have to admit, I’ve seen just about every episode of that horrid show. It’s my guilty pleasure. :o :o

That is the worst of them all. I hope the so-called “friend” and limo driver were also sued in civil court.
