I did a title search in the Search Engine of CAF, but came up with zilch. Apparently, this has never been the immediate topic of any thread in CAF.
  1. Does anyone have a link to the text of this Agreement? I found one from Orthodoxinfo, but I am not sure if what I found is the actual text, or merely a summary by an author from that website.
  2. What are the Orthodox objections to this Agreement?
  3. Are there any Eastern Catholics out there who agree with the objections?
Blessings,
Marduk

P.S. Since the Balamand Agreement directly concerns our Eastern brethren, the questions are, of course, for them, though I would also like to hear the opinions of my Oriental and Latin brethren on the matter.

Hail, Brother Marduk! 🙂

I don’t normally get involved in these things, but you’ve helped me out before, so I’ll just throw a random bone.

Here are some of the links I could find. Maybe one of these might help:

orthodoxinfo.com/ecumenism/ea_balamand.aspx

orthodoxinfo.com/ecumenism/athos_bal.aspx

ecumenizm.tripod.com/ECUMENIZM/id24.html

cin.org/east/balamand.html

orthodoxwiki.org/Balamand_Statement
(The one above seems more interesting, since it comes from Orthodoxwiki.org; that might be more helpful, since this IS a random bone. 🤷 )

romanity.org/htm/rom.13.en.orthodox_and_vatican_agreement.htm

I hope you find what you’re looking for. 😃

With Blessings,

I think the Balamand agreement was a good think. The Antiochian Orthodox have been more faithful to this agreement that other Orthodox have, and this is one of the big reasons I am happier in the Antiochian Church rather than the Russian Church.

A spiritual father I once had in the Russian Church has condemned this agreement and even considers the Antiochian Church to be in heresy because of it! I hope God will forgive me for parting ways with my spiritual father because of this!

You asked for EO point of veiw on this. My view is by no means typical (and you already know my view anyway Brother Marduk). Here’s a little something my spiritual father had to say:

(From orthodoxinfo.com/phronema/, near the bottom of the page)
Fr. Alexey Young (now Hieromonk Ambrose), Book Review of Facing East and The Faith, in Orthodox America (Feb., 1997)
“The Church’s decisions also carry force across time; and for this reason, the decisions of the Holy Fourth Ecumenical Synod are of such binding character that the Church can make no disparate decisions without refuting Herself. In keeping with this spirit, the phrase, ‘We now clearly understand…,’ has no place among Orthodox. The classical Patristic dictum, ‘Following the Holy Fathers…,’ is the only one which expresses how Orthodox understand themselves.”

I read a rather critical discussion of the Balamand Agreement in a journal called The Thomist, and I think it had the full text of the document under attack.
