My grandson has a baseball game on Holy Thursday at 5pm. I have call all the area churches and they only have evening masses. To go to the game I will miss mass. Will I have committed a mortal sin and not be able to take the Eucharist on Easter Sunday.

for future reference, even if it were a holy day or a sunday, i think you could still get a dispensation from your priest if you talked to him before hand.

I would be disappointed in any priest that would dispense the obligation to attend Mass for such a frivolous reason. It’s only one game…

Holy Thursday is not a HDO, so no sin is involved in missing Mass.

However, my daughter’s birthday is tomorrow… and she wants to go bowling. I can’t bring myself to go bowling on Holy Thursday… it just feels so disrespectful! So I understand your feelings. If you feel you need to go to Mass, I think it would be perfectly appropriate to apologize to your grandson for missing this one game and explain that practicing your faith comes before baseball.

What’s more important in the eternal perspective?

Seems like a pretty easy question to answer to me.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Pra Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!
