When I first began the journey that led me to Catholicism, I picked up a book which I thought was harmless enough, Rabbi Jesus by Bruce Chilton. After reading it, though, I realized it was complete blasphemy, going so far as to hypothesize Jesus was not celebate and potentially fornicating w/ Mary Magdalene. In one chapter, Chilton envisons the disciples wondering where Jesus is and the response they get from someone in the know is “In the back with ol’ seven demon Mary again!”

I had picked it up because I hoped it would shed more light on how contemporary Judaism shaped Jesus and his teachings. It goes WAY into conjecture and hypothesizes Jesus was a disciple of John the Baptist from an early age who split with him over the necessity of water for baptism and other issues.

Anyway, now that I’ve warned you about the book, what do I do with it??? I don’t want this piece of rubbish on the shelf next to my bibles and orthodox books. I’m inclined to toss it in the trash but want to see if that’s the right course.

Yes, turn it into kindling for your fire. Honestly it seems like destroying the book seems like the only moral thing to do!

No harm in keeping it. If anyone asks why you have it, just say sometimes you like reading some off the wall attacks on the Church just to keep you on your toes. It’s kind of like visiting chick.com when you’re killing time at work. 😉

If I have a vote I would say burn it. Someone may see it in your possession and not ask about it. It could make someone who is on the fence believe what it says.

If you do keep it. Don’t place it in a place of honor as you do your Bible and other good books.

Tear it up and throw it in the trash or burn it. If you throw it away whole, or take it to a recycle place, it could end up pulled out and “saved” by someone.

You read it! You say it is trash! Treat it like any other unhealthy trash that you may have around the house. Reading it was a sign of you being open minded, getting rid of it is a sign of you keeping a clean house.

Just because something is in a book doesn’t make it

right. I don’t go along with the idea of treating a book as
sacred just because it’s a book. I am surprised you read the
whole thing. Throw it away, before you read it again. You
will make yourself de-sensitized to hearing insults and lies about
our Lord Jesus. We wouldn’t tolerate reading trash about our loved ones, and who do we love more than Jesus?

This was BEFORE I came to the Catholic faith. I was only a dissatisfied Baptist at the time. As soon as I felt the draw of Mother Church and began reading wonderful orthodox literature, I realized how horrible this book is.

I don’t think it’s sacred at all. I just, well, didn’t know if anyone knew anything redeeming about not destroying it.

Thanks for the insights everyone!

When I see books by Dave Hunt at the used bookstore or thrift store, I buy them and throw them away so no one else can read his garbage.

🙂

Speaking of bad books - I started reading Joel Olsteen’s book “Your Best Life NOW!” and within 2 pages said “HERESY HERE!”

It’s trash, right? Then treat it like trash. :yup:
There’s a reason for SHREDDERS, and it’s books like the one described here.

Once shredded, it’ll make great fire starter!

There are some books we’re better off not keeping - This is one of them.

In Christ, Michael
