When I first began the journey that led me to Catholicism, I picked up a book which I thought was harmless enough, Rabbi Jesus by Bruce Chilton. After reading it, though, I realized it was complete blasphemy, going so far as to hypothesize Jesus was not celebate and potentially fornicating w/ Mary Magdalene. In one chapter, Chilton envisons the disciples wondering where Jesus is and the response they get from someone in the know is “In the back with ol’ seven demon Mary again!”
I had picked it up because I hoped it would shed more light on how contemporary Judaism shaped Jesus and his teachings. It goes WAY into conjecture and hypothesizes Jesus was a disciple of John the Baptist from an early age who split with him over the necessity of water for baptism and other issues.
Anyway, now that I’ve warned you about the book, what do I do with it??? I don’t want this piece of rubbish on the shelf next to my bibles and orthodox books. I’m inclined to toss it in the trash but want to see if that’s the right course.
