Banking Cord Blood, Morally Licit?

With a baby on the way, I’ve been looking into banking cord blood.

I’m wondering about the moral ramifications of cord blood banking. On the face of it, it appears morally licit, but since it involves stem cells, I wonder if it actually is?

Does the Church have a position on this topic?

It is morally licit since the stem cell are not embryonic. There was no taking of a life to retrieve these cells. In fact, there has been research into these cells has been very promising.

Bank the cord blood, it may help your child down the road since there will be no chance of rejection of the cells.

With the potential for many lifesaving uses, I must admit, it is very appealing to me. Also, since it does not involve embryonic stem cells, I can see how it could be determined to be morally licit, but does it encourage stem cell research that is morally illicit?

Are there some links you could provide that would reinforce the position of the Church?

I wonder if insurance might offset any expenses associated with this? Does anyone have any experience with that?

It looks like the cost will be about $1,825 for processing and the first year of storage and $125 per year for storage after that. They also have four payment options available. The six month plan gives the most discounts and has no interest. The 4 and 5 year plans charge 9.9% interest. They also will let you purchase an 18 year block of storage with a $400 discount for $1850. They will allow us to exercise that option for up to three years after the initial collection.

Who knows? Maybe we’ll end up thinking this was the best thing we ever did.
 
Thanx for the link, Madia. Cardinal Keeler’s letter iced the cake, for me. Our kit is on the way. Not only did the Cardinal say it’s morally licit, but he was very encouraging of banking cord blood.

So, for the price of a clapped-out used car or a nice plasma TV, I can have the possibility of saving the life of my wife, children or even me. How would one feel if someone in their family could’ve been cured of some dread disease, maybe even saving their life, if they hadn’t been so cheap to risk about 3,600 bucks to collect and store cord blood for 18 years? Seems like some of the cheapest insurance on the planet, to me.

DD did this at no cost because she had her baby at a major medical center that is noted for stem cell research using cord blood, and adult stem cells, and refuses to allow any of its researchers to use fetal cell lines or embryonic stem cell research. their hospital also refuses to perform elective abortions and has one of the few medical schools that do not force students to perform abortions.

When my second was born just over 2 years ago my DH and I banked his cord blood. God willing we will never have to use it but you can never be too sure now adays.
**As to the cost…*our insurance picked up all costs associated with it 👍 ***

Cord Blood Registry , in addition to the $1800 or so, of initial fees including the first year of storage, charges $125 per year, guaranteed for 18 years, at which time the cells become property of the child. That’s a total of $2125 for the remaining 17 year period. They allow the entire balance to be paid up to three years after the birth date offering a $400 discount. So I guess the way to play it would be to pay the $125 each year, for two more years, then pay the balance of $1875, minus the $400 discount for a total of $1475.

I’m curious about what will happen with the insurance, whether they will pay it or if they can/will reprice the bill. For example, you go to the hospital and receive, and are billed for, $1000 of services. If you have insurance, whether or not you’ve met the deductible, you will receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) that will, in this example re-price, those services to $500. If you’ve met the deductible, they’ll pay, if not, you pay. The savings involved in the ‘repricing’ game health insurors can negotiate for the patient can be huge.

Has anyone seen the ‘repriced’ amount for the initial cord blood collection?

We are lucky that our insurance is AWESOME and the company my DH works for is awesome inregards to them providing this GREAT insurance to its employees…they (insurance) paid for everything:)
