Interesting. Laws are designed to ban or prohibit certain activities. Yes, we have a free will but our free will can be influenced by those who follow the flesh and put it in front of our faces or in our ears over almost any media you can think of.

Prior to 1973, abortion was banned in the United States.

Peace,
Ed

Laws that are not Gods laws are almost irrelevant. As Catholics, we live under Gods law first and whatever ravings of the politicians in the country we live in as a very distant second. When the laws of the country differ from Gods law, we follow Gods law. For example, If the law says we must turn in someone for execution or die, we die because God says thou shall not kill.

It is true we are influenced by many different things, but we still are not allowed to ban them. We simply do not participate in them. We try to show those that are involved in it what it does to their soul. We are there to save them when they realise and want to come back to God. Banning something simply makes people want it more and hate those that banned it (us). We cannot save their souls if they hate us. We cannot save them if they will not come to us.

I know what you mean about abortions being banned until 1973 in the United States. The pure number of illegal abortions that were committed, the number of tortured babies, and the number of mothers that died because of the conditions, the pain, the suffering. It is just another proof of the moral corruption and lack of faith in God in the United States. But it is not surprising. The US has been morally bankrupt for generations now…

Ban it. It’s vile, a mockery, satanic.

Something so beautiful, a gift from God where we can participate in His creation act is made evil and the mainstream culture laps it up as if it were something to celebrate.

Pornography is one of, if not the leading cause of immorality in society today. It all comes down to that perversion of sex.

Ban it for good, all forms.
Amen!

I wonder what the source of your idea is that Catholics cannot support banning anything? Actually, doesn’t the law ban burglary, assault, and many other things?
Simple Answer - No

Complex answer
A Catholic cannot support banning anything. We can say that something is wrong and is an affront to God; however we can under no circumstances ban anything.

It basically boils down to this. God gives us the choice to follow him or to walk a different path. It is well within his power to force us to love him but instead God wants us to love him as he loves us…

We have to choose to love him; we have to choose to follow him. When we ban something, we are saying “you cannot choose to do that” – we are taking away one of the key things that God has given us. The choice to do what is right, independently.

So it comes down to this. Is pornography wrong – yes. Is pornography an affront to God – yes. Is there anything good or noble about pornography – no. Can Catholics ban pornography, or anything else – no. We actually have an obligation to fight to make sure things are not banned. Those that ban, have no faith in God.

You know, there’s a huge difference between liberty, in which a person exercises free will, and licentiousness, in which a person cooperates directly with evil.

We owe it to God and His creation to protect one another from sin and scandal.

Pornography is one of the worst evils that societies around the world are facing today. Some people just don’t get how satanic it is. The devil is laughing at all of those who participate in it or otherwise apologize for it without repentance.

If you’ll pardon the expression, to hell with pornography. It is not worth separating yourself from God over. And woe to the pornographers out there who lead others into damnation.

We owe it to God and His creation to protect one another from sin and scandal.
That’s the problem – in attempting to force someone to turn from sin and love God, we are undoing Gods work, and that is, God gave THEM the choice, not YOU the right to choose for them. That is why Catholics cannot stand for any form of censorship and the evil that goes with it.

Huh? Censorship exists everywhere. Justified censorship. You cannot simply publish and say anything you like, you know that right? We already do have porn censorship - child porn is illegal and so is animal porn as far as I know.

Porn is not God’s work. You are misapplying freedom that God gives us and how he expects us to use it. Do we walk around not putting murderes in jail because that would be “undoing God’s work”? How utterly bizarre.

Censorship is not an evil either, so I am not sure where you get that from. It is not intrinsically evil. In the case of banning porn, it would be good. There is nothing at all good about letting people access porn. Nothing. You cannot justify it ever, and definitely not using Catholic theology.

I do know we have censorship now and as any good Catholic I fight it. There is no such thing as justified Censorship. Censorship is intrinsically evil as it is forcing one person’s view on another. Catholic theology teaches us to reject evil.

Yes, we do put murderers in Jail instead of in psychiatric hospitals, where they should be, and it is terrible. If someone is that lost that they do not know Gods word to the point of killing, then they need to be healed and shown God’s word. They need to be helped both spiritually and psychologically. The fact that we let them get to that stage in the first place is a terrible blight on us as Catholics.

As for "You cannot justify it ever, and definitely not using Catholic theology.” I just did.

I disagree. Someone previously cited the Catechism of the Catholic Church on this issue. Here is the quote in more detail:

*2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials. *

I disagree. The Catholic Church has long favored using the power of the state to protect its citizen’s vis a vis the Church’s moral teachings… For example, it favors banning abortion and it favors banning same-sex marriage, to give two current issues.

There is no such thing as justified Censorship.
Then you don’t live on earth if you think that is true. Try publish a book on,say, how to rape children. See how far you get.
Censorship is intrinsically evil as it is forcing one person’s view on another.
Huh? Censorship is not forcing anything on another. In any case, once again, this kind of thing can be justified. We force our views on others all the time. Do you vote? Why? So you can have your way with issues and the opposing party must accept it. I am totally baffled by your responses, they just don’t follow or make logical sense. We force our views on paedophiles. On theifs. On nazi’s. On racists. On sexual predators.

There is nothing unjust about forcing someone with immoral, evil views to turn towards God as long as it is not by physical force or using immoral means (and banning porn is not immoral at all, and if it were, the principle of double effect would have it covered).
The fact that we let them get to that stage in the first place is a terrible blight on us as Catholics.
Nobody lets murders get to that place. They are guilty.
As for "You cannot justify it ever, and definitely not using Catholic theology.” I just did.
No you didn’t. You used faux-theology and poor logic.

.
Sure we can. I am a Catholic. I support banning pornography. Ergo, you are mistaken.

You are making up stuff. No where in Catholic teaching does it support your view.

I know you’re already getting criticized from every angle already, but this simply is not correct. Do we not create laws to ban murder? Assault? Child pornpgraphy?

Should we no fight to ban things like snuff films?

I think that your position – when taken to its logical conclusion – leads to anarchy.

Banning something does not take away someone’s free will. People still choose to make child porn and to kill people. Condoning or enabling such activity is not necessary to protect the free will of individuals. (If anything, I think it actually harms free will…but that’s another discussion for another thread.)

You very badly mistaken. Permitting occasions of sin is sinful in itself. You also claim to speak for Catholics as a body, and are not only dead wrong herein, but flirting with apostasy.

The kingdom of God is not a democracy…

I understand nobody will like this and I hope I do not offend anyone. I actually dont have that much of a problem with pornography providing obviously only adults are involved and they are consenting. I respect other people’s desires are not the same as my own. For myself I don’t watch porn, I dont see the point in it. I can understand what some people see in it (ie those who are lonely or unhappy, but I still think they should address other issues in their lives before turning to porn).

I think people acting in porn, making porn, distributing porn, or watching porn are missing something very beautiful in their lives, and my only hope is that they find it so that they break the cycle they become entrenched in. Personally (probably from a typical woman’s perspective) I can think of nothing worse than my future husband needing porn in the future, it would really make me feel incredibly worthless.

God bless xxx

Of course it should be illegal. The practicality of achieving this in the USA is a long way off though.

Catholics, as outlined in the USCCB Faithful Citizenship document are called to identify moral issues, but prioritize according to the proportionate impact of the identified issues. Damaging as they are, porn and contraception would fall WAY down the priority list to far worse issues out there: abortion, human cloning / experimentation, euthanasia, immigration reform, sensible health care reform and so on.

Bringing it up in the public square right now would just dilute our effectiveness in more pressing areas.

As much as I will like to agree with the banning of porn. I must dissagree. We were told to give unto Ceasar what is his.

As citizens of the United Sates wether we agree with a law we must abaide by such law. Can we elect people to office that will change the law yes we can and should. But alas it will not happen. Why becuase as a society we have moved a way from GOD.

Murder is not banned it is made ilegal you still have the choice to commit the crime. Drug useage is not ilegal the possetion is though. So how can one ban pornwhen GOD gave us free will. In the end they will answer.

Now if a politician or group of politicains run on the platform of banning porn we must vote for them becuase allowing them to fail by no voting is allow the sin that is porn is a sin. The occasion of sin.

I do not aggree with a lot of things that are legal but until afforded the oportuntity to vote for the people willing to pass the law I must remain passive to ones free choice. I can advise and even protest but I can not stop nor hidder them from comitting the sin. They will answer for it them selves.

For both abortion and pornography, I firmly believe that we have to change a decent majority of citizens’ hearts before we should institute an outright ban. If the Supreme Court banned all abortion across the USA tomorrow on account of the unborn’s fundamental due process right to life, it might work to save more babies, but it could equally be likely to result in the loss of the rule of law., with very few babies saved. I’m torn, as a practical decision. If there were a general public consensus against abortion, the naysayers would have no choice but to accept. A more practical ruling, although quite possibly illogical, is to return the issue to the states (the Supremes could say that abortion of the unborn ‘person’ is illegal, but let each state decide if and when an unborn becomes a ‘person’).

With regards to pornography, an outright totalitarian ban could very well prove ineffective and again might read to the crumbling of the rule of law. Notwithstanding that concern, the government should clean up porn in limited ways, at the very least. More restrictions on the clubs, and way more decency on the public and semi-public airwaves (basic cable packages) would be great for starters, leaving the internet to private filtering.

You would not want to threaten usage of porn in any way (except child porn), as the government costs associated even with fines would likely be staggering. Attack the producers, at the club and airways level (public), letting the rest go until the hearts of men and women are more in compliance.

Porn is not only psychologically addictive, it is psychically addictive as well. And internet porn is the crack cocaine of pornography. Millions hooked and living secret lives of shame and desperation.

For the public good, it should be banned, made illegal. The sites crashed.

Flush the toilet!

Before you can make pornography illegal, you must first have a definition of it that will stand up in court. No one has yet been able to come up with a legal definition of pornography.
