I was looking through an old album and came across a copy of a parish bulletin that included the posting of banns of marriage.
I remember when I got married in 1971, our banns were posted for three consecutive weeks prior to the wedding.
I also know that none of my daughters – married in 2001, 2004 and 2006 in Catholic churches in three different states – had their banns posted.
Have the rules changed? (And who sets the rules?
I can see that once upon a time (as in 1971 when the dinosaurs roamed the earth), banns were posted locally because people stayed put and would know if there were causes that would prevent a wedding from taking place, while now people move so much that banns would likely be posted in communities who had no idea who the bride or groom was . . .
