Banns of Marriage?

the purpose of the publication (and in the old days before there were printed bulletins they were read from the pulpit) is so that anyone who knew the couple or knew any reason why they could not validly marry, would come forward. And indeed they might very well be published in more than one location, if one party came from another parish. Now the pre-cana process includes and investigation
Code:
and requires testimony of witnesses regarding freedom to marry
, so that more formal processes has replaced the publishing of banns, at least in this country. Some parishes still do publish from custom, and I sure wishe they would announce marriages in the bulletin at least after they have taken place.
I have never heard of this  is it universal? How many testimonies are required? How are the witnesses chosen?

It’s not universal, we just heard of it recently when a bride-to-be’s mother asked our pastor to help her fill out FORM X which we’d never heard about. The daughter’s pastor faxed us the form and it was then that we discovered that many dioceses required these witness testimonies (minimum of 2, I think).

I remember back in Newfoundland hearing banns. They were published in the bulletin, and also in the diocesan newspaper, IIRC. Also, at the end of Mass, the reader announced: “There is a promise of marriage between X, son of A and B of this parish, and Y, daughter of M and N of St Joseph’s Parish. Anyone knowing of any impediment to this marriage is bound to make it known to the pastor.”*

I finished the Merck’s a long time ago. IIRC, the PDR is the American equivalent to the CPS – done that too.😃

Yeah, the Minuteman III system manual sounds like just the ticket for those empty evenings when I’m not on CAF.:rotfl: :rotfl:
A Merck index?

Oh my, you really ARE hard up for entertainment.

I was just married in the Church this past May. No banns were required just an interview with Fr. concerning our eligibility to wed.

It was Only on My request that any sort of announcement was made in the bulletin of my upcoming marriage.

Shoot,we didn’t even have any Pre-Cana,Fr. just insisted that we attend an Engagement Encounter weekend. Ya,really learned alot there.

Encounter weekends took the place of pre-Cana many moons ago. All of my kids went thru encounter weekends. Not much to learn I guess, since kids that age know everything anyway. 😃

Yes you did. 😉

Engaged Encounter weekends do not “take the place of” pre-Cana – They are among the acceptible *forms *which pre-Cana instruction may take (and which vary from diocese to diocese).

nowdays esp with people moving around so much, the couples coming in for marriage don’t have family in the parish, and are not known to pastor or staff, and they must establish they have never been married before, in the Church or civilly, and that they are otherwise properly disposed for marriage. This is in addition to a recent baptismal certificate which will show all sacraments. If the couple and their families are well known to the pastor, it may not be necessary, but that is not always the case any more.

For all of our Catholic friends and for my husband and I, we had to get witness testimonies. We were all married within the last 6 years. Usually, we can use our parents or anyone else who has known us for our entire or almost entire lives. I had to have two witnesses and my husband had to have two witnesses - so four altogether.

As for the banns, I don’t think they had them at my parish or my husband’s parish, but neither of us attended mass at our respected parishes since we sang in the choir at the cathedral every Sunday, and which was where we actually got married.

I’m currently in marriage prep and my fiance and I each have to get two witness forms attesting to our freedom to marry.

Our parish doesn’t call them Banns, but upcoming marriages are posted in the bulletin for the three weeks prior to the ceremony.

ethelzguy…

I was a (young:p ) 46 year old widow with a grandson when I was married in May. All those young couples at the encounter weekend were in the 20’s and have never been married, shoot, my husband and I were even older then the couples hosting the weekend, and my first marriage was longer then theirs:rolleyes:

Not to derail this thread, but I highly support the weekend for first timers but NOT at the expense of fore going the Pre-Cana with the priest or deacon.

Are they posted as true banns (multiple weeks) or more as announcements of upcoming or recent marriages in the parish, whether or not they call them “banns?”

I’m suddenly fascinated . . . my girls were married in fairly conservative diocese without banns.
We had no banns posted…we were never asked about them by anyone at our parishes. I can’t say I’ve ever seen them in a bulletin, either!

Our engaged encounter weekend was very very educational. We spent a significant amount of time on NFP and even had several trainer couples come and present to us. Very imforming.

I am thankful for the engaged encounter weekend. Many couples there didn’t realize that ABC was intrinsicly evil. Quite a few walked away that weekend with an increase in knowledge of Catholic Sexual Morality.

My comment was rather tongue-in-cheek. I am a supporter of both Engagement/Marriage encounter weekends. Yes, the EE weekends DO stress NFP and appropriate views on sexuality within marriages.

Well, they were certainly called Banns in my parish only two years ago! 🤷

If they aren’t called Banns anymore, then what ARE they called??

This week’s bulletin DOES list them as actual Banns. The format is the same as always, but now it’s titled as “Banns of Marriage”. It must depend on the person doing the bulletin layout for each week. 🤷
