Theres personal reason why that i dont want to get into on this level. But i am looking into being baptised by a Ukranian Catholic priest in a Roman Catholic church? Is this allowed?
Also the Ukranian Catholic baptism includes all three sacrements baptism, confirmation and first communion all at once at least that is the ancient tradition of the east, when many Eastern Catholic kids started to go to the Latin schools they were allowed to do what the western people did.So if its just baptism, the RC records could just say baptism?🙂

This is permitted if the Eparch and the Bishop agree to it. Yes, if you are just baptized in a RC church, the records will just say baptism. However, since you are an adult, it is more likely that you will receive all the sacraments of initiation together. This is most commonly done at the Pascha.

Interesting. I suppose you intend to be canonically enrolled in the Ukrainian Catholic Church? Will you be attending one/is there one nearby? What I’m getting at is your motivation. As the previous poster answered. It can be done, but I assume that the baptizing Priest and the Bishop involved would have to know your intentions, etc.
God Bless,
p.s. I hope I didn’t sound rude-not my intention:thumbsup:

  1. Borrow the church in essence. I think this is irregular and there would be resistance because the initiation happens in the middle of the Divine Liturgy so that you can receive the Eucharist, but I don’t know for sure. I am guessing that you want to avoid initiation in a UGCC parish. The initiation occurs for adults in Latin and Eastern Churches after becoming a catechumen. There are some canon laws that are followed (UGCC and LC) for enrollment, rights, and obligation of the catechumen.
  2. Unlike the Eastern Churches, the Latin Church records the baptism and confirmation in different registers.
If this is some sort of delicate situation, talk to the Ukrainian priest so he can help.

the priest would first determine what is your proper rite, which if I understand correctly is that of your father, or your mother if he is not baptized. If you are baptized into a specific rite the form of initiation for that rite would be followed, even if a Roman Catholic priest presided, you would be fully initiated in all 3 sacraments and that fact would be entered in the baptismal record of the parish where this occured and the notice sent to the relevant bishop or eparchy of your rite (if performed in a parish outside your rite).

as I understand RCIA is still the norm for initiating adults in the Eastern rites, which in any case means all 3 sacraments of initiation are conferred at the same time, just as they would be for a Roman Catholic.

The question is not sufficiently clear to respond to it in my estimation. But at my age, I do tend to confuse easily.🙂

Three points could be made, but only in general observation.

First, it can be said that anyone to be baptized who has completed the fourteenth year of age can freely choose to be baptized in the Latin Church or in another Ritual Church sui iuris, and in this case the person belongs to that Church which is chosen (c.111 §2).

Second, it should be noted that the ministers are to celebrate the sacraments according to their own rite (c. 846 §2).

Third, it is correct that enrollment in a Church sui iuris through Christian baptism (or reception) is regulated by the canons and not by the minister of baptism (or reception).

Anything beyond that would require knowing a little more of the specifics.

We do not know the age of the person, the canonical status of the parents if the person has not not completed 14 years of age, and what is intended by asking if baptism by a “Ukrainian Catholic priest in a Roman Catholic church” is allowed. Into what Church is the person seeking Christian initiation?

Assuming it is the Ukrainian liturgical celebration, and you are borrowing the church, absolutely. It is not uncommon for Latin parishes and church edifices to be used by Eastern Catholics with the gracious permission of the appropriate Latin pastor, especially in mission areas where there are no sizeable Eastern Catholic churches. The Latin pastor has the authority to allow other Catholic celebrations in his parish to priests who have current faculties from their respective bishops. There are Eastern Catholic missions that meet in and use Latin parishes regularly.

If you intend to be baptized in the Latin liturgical tradition, there is no reason for an Eastern Catholic priest to be involved directly unless he has biritual faculties.

The notation should be clear on the baptismal register that all three sacraments were conferred. The UGCC priest will be able to take care of this.
