My sister-in-law is converting and has asked me to be her sponsor. :extrahappy:

She has sung as a cantor in the same catholic church for nearly twenty years. She’s quite familiar with the liturgy to say the least. She’s never been Baptized, although she did stand as a proxy godmother to my son in 2006.

I’d like to get a gift of some sort for her to officially kick off her RCIA journey. I’m not sure what would be appropriate since she has been a big part of the Sunday liturgy for so many years, not to mention several religious pilgrimages to Europe with her choir. I’d also like to get something for her when she is actually Baptized in the Spring. I was thinking maybe a copy of Christian Prayer would be nice. That might be a bit too heavy to start her out with though, I’m not sure what would be appropriate.

I’ve never sponsored anyone before, nor have I ever been asked to be a godparent. The only Baptism I’ve had the pleasure of attending was that of my own son only two years ago (the anniversary of which is Tuesday, please remember him in your prayers that day!).

How do I best support my sister-in-law in approaching this most important sacrament?

This is truly great news! It’s amazing that she has ministered in the church for so long without joining it. I might suggest a gift that will support her journey: Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI. It’s an excellent book, full of great insights, but not too heavy.

How about the “Catholic Fallback”? A Rosary! Get it blessed, and when you give it to her, explain that non-Catholics cannot recieve blessed items because we can’t be sure that they’ll be treated properly. That should convey how special this really is.

Or a book on the saints? A Catechism? A Crucifix? A book of Catholic Prayers (though I agree, Christian Prayer is too heavy (and confusing!). I had to have our Deacon explain it to me, and even now I’m not sure I’m doing it right…😊

I’ll bet she’ll be required to get a catechism for RCIA, at least I would hope so. I’ll make sure she has one. But as a gift, a book of saints sounds like a real good idea to kick off her journey.

It’s difficult to know what to get her considering she’ll be receiving three incredibly important sacraments all at once. I doubt she’s very familiar with the sacrament of Confirmation and what that means for a Catholic.

She was just telling me at lunch the other day that she was given a rosary while on a pilgrimage in Italy. The person who gave it to her was somewhat of a “new age” catholic if you catch my drift… She was also given communion “unofficially” whatever that means. I didn’t go into it much with her, I thought it best I didn’t know! From the sounds of it, my sister in law knew now, if not then that the whole episode was not necessarily wise.
