Baptism 2nd time

I was orginally baptized Catholic as an infant, after college I stopped going to Church, but soon got involved in an evangelical christian church. I was ignorant, and got baptized in that Church, that was about 10 years ago…I left that church, and over the past two years have Come back to the Catholic Church.

How serious of a sin is this?
 
You need to discuss this with your priest in confession.

Whether or not something is a mortal sin, depends upon full knowledge and free will in addition to grave matter.

It is definitely grave matter. But, if you did not have full knowledge regarding what you were doing, there may be less culpability.

First of all, you need to go to Confession and reconcile yourself back to Christ and His Church. While many of us here at these forums can opine, you need to sit down and talk to a priest.

The second baptism really doesn’t amount to anything because you were already marked with the sign of faith when you were baptized into the Church. The indelible mark of God’s grace does not leave you; therefore, you can’t be re-baptized.

As to the other matter, please see a priest as soon a possible.

**Being baptized a second time certainly isn’t sinful. It’s invalid but not sinful. Your first baptism in the Church is what is important. You should probably lay out the whole thing to your parish priest. Many former Catholics come back to the Church and are reconciled to the sacraments. You’re on the right road. Stick to it and may God’s graces be with you!👍 **

It is sinful to have a second baptism with full knowledge of what baptism means as taught by the Catholic Church. It is a public heretical scismatic statement.

**It would be if the person had full knowledge of what baptism means as taught by the Catholic Church, but Andrew admits that he did not understand this. Anyway, being baptized a second time wouldn’t matter anyway because he was already baptized in the Church.

Yes, that’s what I meant by “with full knowledge”.
Sometimes people will get baptized in another faith in order to make that public statement of renouncing the Catholic faith.Op says he was ignorant. That was best left for him to discuss with his priest to determine the culpability of his ignorance.
