Hi everyone, sorry I’m kind of new to the forum, so sorry if this is in the wrong place.

My question is on baptism, and converting.

I was baptised a “New” Leuthren, in 1993. However I had never regularly attended church. Now that I’m old enough to understand the values and meanings of each religion, I’ve decided that it was a mistake to be baptised a leuthren, and wanted to convert to be a
Roman Catholic.

I was watching EWTN, or the religious channel, and was listening to Fr. Benedict Groshel in Sunday Night Live. He had a question asked of him on why women baptise there children later then they used to, and he said while answering the question that,

“A person can only be baptised once.” So that got me thinking, and worried, that I could never become a true catholic. So then I thought of converting. I’m not exactly sure how to convert, and if I could, how could I make up lost time for the first and second communion, that way I may recieve the sacrament?

Thank you so much!

Mike

Hello and welcome 🙂

We believe in one Baptism and certainly as a Baptized Lutheran, the Catholic Church would honor such a Baptism. Contact a local Catholic Church and set up an appointment to discuss your conversion. For most people in the US, this would involve attending a RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) where you would learn about the faith. Most parishes have programs starting right now or very soon. After much prayer, study and preparation, you can decide to enter the Church through the RCIA program and most folks typically enter the Church at Easter.

Peace be with you!

Kelly 🙂

See this Catholic Answers article on How to become a Catholic.

Awesome! Thank you for the information! I’m glad to hear that I can still be apart of the Catholic community even though I was not baptized as one. I will try to enroll, the only person that I would have to convice is my mother, as she does not go to church, and may forbid me of going every sunday or some type of week day because of her work schedule. I will surely try!

Thank you!

Wonderful and do continue to post here - we love to keep track of those on a journey to the Catholic Church.

If you are not yet 18, they probably have a program specialized for people your age as well. Most RCIA programs in my area meet on an evening once a week. Many others will meet on Sunday immediately following Mass.

God bless you,

Kelly

Yes, and quite an adventure it would be! I have always had this empty space in my heart. I was afraid religion would condem me to hell, instead of saving me, what a silly thought that was I relize now, so I had avoided it for a good few months. As time went on it just got worse, and I started feeling depressed and such. Well two days ago, I turned on EWTN and decided to try a mass, and saying the rosery. The way I had felt during that hour and a half, was so amazing and peacefull, words nor feelings could express it! Thats when I found my missing peice.

Thank you everyone

Mike

I’m meeting with a priest tomorrow afternoon about the RCIA. You’re not alone, Ryuu. 🙂

Edit: doesn’t it seem to everyone else that there is a need for a forum for newcomers to the Catholic Church, RCIA, and the like? 😉 😉 😉

Glad to know I’m not alone! I read all of the requirements to become apart of the Catholic community and all I drew up was a

A forum section would be great! It sure would help with all the terms and such! It would be greatly appreciated! I have yet to contact a priest or such, but I have Father Larry from St.Damians in mind. My Aunt, Uncle, and Cousin goes there, and I’m sure my Aunt would support me 100% of the way. My Mother may think of it as weird, that I have all of a sudden wanted to do this.

How nice!

Your desire alone is amazing.
Ryuu and George C, I am thinking how wonderful it is you both can relate to each other.
It’s good to have someone else that you can exchange with that shares your desire.

The Holy Spirit is amazing.

I am also trying to be a catholic.

Monica

Thank you Monica!

I don’t know why I feel the way I do, when I pray and say the rosery, it just gives me this peace that can be acieved no other way.

I had told my mom, I do not want to be a leutheran, and she said she will not support me in my desision. However I have heard this from her before, and I will try my hardest. I don’t know why she does’nt like the catholic faith. She said she does’nt like how the Fathers tell you how to live your life. IMO (In my opinion) In order to be a catholic church, and to lead one, you must instruct the congregation on the ways of the lord, and how to get to everlasting life. I will try to convince her as time goes on. Until then, secretly praying, reading the bible, hosting a “mass” alone, and watching all the wonderfull EWTN networks will have to do.

Thank you all!

Hello Mike,

Keep praying. Keep loving your mother, as you do, as Jesus did.
She will see in you a difference in your life, and she will be open to this in time. I pray.

Thank you Monica, as I shall have the utmost respect for her, for not only is it polite but it is a commandment, and the least I can do is honor them.

I am going to try to print information of this faith, that way she can understand it more. She infact is a catholic, however, she had given up church a long time ago…

I shall also pray for your journey to becoming a christian, and catholic!

Mike

Ryuu, God bless you for your desire to be in full communion with Christ’s one true Church!

I’m a convert myself, with two children baptized in the Presbyterian church (their baptisms were accepted as valid, although my oldest son told me he wished he’d been baptized Catholic:) ) and two in the Catholic Church. I was baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church but not raised Catholic.

Pray for your mom, be patient with her and model a sincere and joyful faith for her. My mother was somewhat negative on the Catholic Church (she became Catholic to please my dad, and had the typical Protestant perception of its beliefs being comprised of “man-made” traditions and rules). When I was becoming Catholic, I had the opportunity to share with her what I was learning (if she was interested in hearing) and to answer her questions. After a few years, she expressed a desire to return to the Church (after 40 years’ absence) and started attending Mass. That was just two years before her death, so I marvel at God’s providence and His mercy. God bless you!

Thank you Veritas!

I shall pray for her, that she may understand that it isnt a club or a phase, and that it is eternal life! I also would like to commend you on your conversion! I was afraid at first, that if I wasnt baptised as such that I wouldnt ever be a true catholic, and I would be kind of like a half blooded catholic or such, but I relize now, it doesnt matter how late you start to worship the lord, its that you do worship him in his true church!

May your mother rest in peace!

Thank you

Mike

My mom’s not fond of my decision either. I told her that I love her, but she has no say in my decision whatsoever.

Good luck and God bless. 🙂

I’ll post a message about tomorrow’s meeting. 👍

She is still your mother, and you can show her by your actions and your everyday activities, how its a good choice.

But, telling her off- that may keep her from the Church…

Just thinking out loud now, (I am a mom)

I didn’t tell her off. I just stated the facts.

She made it clear she has no desire to go to Mass. In all, I think she took the news well. Five years ago we would’ve been shouting at each other. We’re totally different, except that we’re both stubborn and opinionated.

I agree with that - George, do make sure that your mother understands that our Church considers it very sinful to be disrespectful to parents. Make sure she understands that you will always obey her in everything (although you can no longer go to the Lutheran Church, since you will now be going to Mass - but in everything else, you will be obedient), and that you will always treat her with the greatest kindness, because this is what God commands us to do.

Me too! You will be in my intentions. And the OP, and Jmcrae.
