I’m having problems finding an answer to a question about choosing Godparents for a baptism.

I know one of the requirements is that the child has one Catholic Godparent. Is there a restriction on the type of Catholic?

My wife and I would like to have our Sister-In-Law as Godmother. She is Ukrainian Catholic. My wife’s brother would then be the Christian witness.

Can a Ukrainian Catholic be a Godparent for a Roman Catholic?

Thanks in advance!

If they are in communion with Rome, yes. I’m Roman Catholic and my wife is Byzantine Catholic. We are going to be Godparents to our nephew in the Byzantine Rite. I’m also a confirmation sponser for my Byzantine sil. Hope this helps, Tim
