My six year old grandson is finally going to be baptised

Is it necessary for him to wear white , like you would an infant.?
We are buying him an outfit.and are unsure.
Clothing a six year old boy in white sounds like a challenge.

No, not necessary. A suit would be fine, or a blazer and pants. If there is a school uniform store near you, you can find what he’ll need.

He will receive a white garment of some sort as part of the Baptism.

Unless the parish has given special instructions I think you can safely chose whatever nice outfit you like. I do think a white shirt would be appropriate.

Most likely, a white garment will be supplied after the Baptism. I would ask whoever is doing the planning what they recommend. I would think that a jacket and white shirt would be the ticket. The jacket would probably come off prior. If it’s anything like the adult Baptisms in my parish, they get completely drenched by large vessles of water. THey actually have the adults wear these brown robes. Then after, they go in back and change into white robes. (And I presume their street clothes underneath.)

if you want, they do sell white suits for boys. Go to any store that sells clothing for First Communion, but white is not necessary. He will receive a “symbolic” white garment.
As previously mentioned., I would ask if they Baptize by immersion.

My son was recently confirmed and chose a white satin vest. He looked very handsome. White is not necessary but maybe he would like to wear a white vest? Or maybe let him help choose something special to wear. My sons like to dress up for special occasions. If he participates in the choice maybe it will make it more meaningful for him.

In our parish we tell the parents not to be concerned about white garments for kids that age. Once they are baptized we dress them in an alb, which they wear for the rest of Mass.

That’s what my parish would do. But then we almost exclusively baptize by immersion.

You would think there are enough parishes in the USA and Canada baptizing by immersion such that ALL parishes would feel the need to give instructions on clothing. But I guess not.

The few kids in that age group who’ve been baptized in our parish were not baptized by immersion but we still presented them with their white garment and dressed them in the alb.
