We recently had our daughter baptized by Fr. P, a priest at our parish. When her baptismal certificate arrived in the mail a week later, it says she was baptized by Msgr. S, who is pastor of our parish. Was this a mistake or do pastors usually get official credit for baptizing their own parishioners? Just curious. If the former, is there any reason we might want to get a corrected copy?

It’s possible that whoever entered the baptism in the register made a mistake, or it was not made clear to him/her that someone other than the pastor had celebrated the baptism. I would bring it to their attention.

I know sometimes it is celebrated by (for example) Deacon Joe, but done under the authority of Father or Msgr Smee. (for example). I have seen that done in my parish before. or am I mis informed?

The sacramental record lists the name of the person who actually performed the sacrament (or witnessed it, in the case of marriage). So the certificate should show the same thing.

So I called the rectory and she said it was a mistake. They mailed me a corrected certificate.

Thank you!
